XP loss makes me want to stop playing.

The death penalty in this game is very much a must have. Without it, it becomes a mindless hack n slash where nothing happens of any consequence to you if you play bad. So you don't learn from your mistakes.
Fuck this game

That would actually be kind of amazing. No penalty for poor play and next to no reward for playing well. It would be an incredibly bland gaming experience.

You should check out Progress Quest. It takes this to the next level.

No XP loss because there is no death.

In fact, there's no gameplay at all. You just run it and it endlessly grinds for you! It distills the grind game down to its purest essence. It's almost beautiful.

The unfortunate part is that the hardcore crowd want to influence the way that default players play the game.

And you know what? You are right. You have to learn to adapt to play the game as if you were playing in the hardcore league. I think that's the frustrating truth. Why even have a default league if... at some point... that 15% XP loss is literally close to the average dead HC character? Do you understand what I'm saying here? What if I hit level 90, and I die a couple of times... causing basically an 8 hour loss of time. What is the average DEAD HC character level? I know in 8 hours of play I probably can easily get to close to level 50. I can get to 35 in roughly 2 hours of play now. So - basically we are in effect imposing THE SAME death penalty to both groups of players... at some point.

I hope that makes sense.

You do not have to play the default league like the hardcore league.

Playing more carefully/smart in default is rewarded and playing carelessly is penalized. And they slowly ease you into it by making death penalties more punishing as you learn the game/level up. Is 15% too harsh? Thats debateable, but having a death penalty gives death a meaning in the game, and the player a reason to want to avoid it.

And the point you make that they are basically imposing the same death penalty to default and hardcore players is comparing apple to oranges. You have to compare a death in hardcore and a death in default of the same character level. It will take much longer to level a hardcore character because you will be much more carefull and when you die in hardcore you obviously lose that char. So if you die at level 90 in deafult and lose 8 hours lets say, dying at level 90 in hardcore loses you 100 hours..... or however long it takes to get to 90. You can't tell me thats the same.

PS: I only play softcore

EDIT: I think someone already made this point. But the death penalty won't seem as bad once more high level content/acts are added. This should give us more high level areas to level in which equals more exp. Lets face it, the game is not done. We aren't really supposed to be level 80+ yet

Personally I think the problem lies in how long normal actually takes to complete. If it took weeks to even hit cruel there would be no reason to complain about merciless and the exp penalty. As it is, a half dedicated player is going to either get to merc or totally hit a wall around level 50 in a few days. This game is not that deep. If you want to enjoy it at all you need to accept that :P

You're still in the 60s. It's real fast to get that xp back. You should be able to get 45% back in under 40 minutes. Run the forest. Assuming your character is strong you can get 6-8% in under 3 minutes. Ledge is still sorta viable. Get into a good docks group you should receive 12-15 xp every 5-6 minutes.

It's a game. Have fun with it. So you died. Just keep plugging. It is a grinding game after all.

I'm not in merc forest, I'm not in merc docks. I can farm ledges, though.

I don't exactly rape the game, 99% of the reasons due to gear.

I'm still using Ilevel 30-40 stuff because the links I need to keep my build either won't drop, won't craft, or are so ridiculously overpriced it's not worth it.

Kinda hard to part with a 5-link Grove Bow that gives me the BRGGG setup to make my main skill powerful, when all the game drops is 1 slots and the bow that CAN be an upgrade hasn't 5-linked in over 30 link attempts.

Combination of gear woes and server problems are quickly killing the game for me. Dying due to either is the straw that makes me hit that little red X and look elsewhere.

I would love to know the AVERAGE death level of a HC player for POE - that would settle this dispute here and now.

Even if the AVERAGE death level of a HC player in POE was about 60... which I guarantee you it's much much lower... you can easily compare the penalties and how out of whack there are.... even at level 70 1 death in HC is less of a time loss than 1 death in Default at level 85.

I play extremely careful now. I play as if I was in HC and that 1 death to me would mean I lose my character. So they are absolutely and totally comparable and right now default is actually more hardcore than hardcore.

Wanna see some gear I have from HC players who traded them after dropping out of the hardcore league? Yeah - that's wicked hardcore to be able to do that, isn't it.

There needs to be some penalty for dying but honestly, I too think it's a little ridiculous. Yeah, yeah I get it. Don't die, go play hardcore, blah, blah, blah. It sucks being stuck farming 67-69 maps hoping and praying you get a higher level map so you can get more then 1% exp per run. The death penalty wouldn't be bad if you could actually make back that experience in a timely manner. You hit like 85 and you can do probably 30-50 maps before you can make back the 15% exp you lost from one mistake or desync. Upping the drop rate of maps, maybe raising the exp you get from maps, something. I understand they don't want people "beating" the game 2 months into the beta, it's a game for "hardcore gamers" and that's it's "still a beta" as every fan boy wants to point out, but it would be nice to have something done. Now OP complaining at level 61 about the exp loss when he probably gets 10% exp a run, that's another story.

I agree with this to some extent. I started the day at level 84 and 70%, but after three desync deaths I've lost a couple days of grinding. I really love this game, but you have to admit its a pretty harsh penalty to lose that much of a time investment through no fault of your own. I know the game is still in beta and I'm very confident GGG will get this problem ironed out. Until they do, however, the exp loss needs to be lessened or exp gain from maps increased. It's hard to find the motivation to grind for that next level knowing desync is waiting for you.

For you high level HC players I give you serious props for lasting as long as you have. Even with an oh shit button at your disposal lol.
