I don't want to spend skill points :l

Try to plan your build in advance by using around 60 skill points on the website build planner. Then once you reach that stage in game you will have enough left to fix any weak points of your build.

Try checking out the forums for each class to see related builds and even make a thread asking people to scrutinise. Just a few days back I made a thread about my ele bow templar and it now has over 4k views and some useful feedback!

The tree is a little intimidating. It's extremely likely that I'll end up making a number of decisions I'll later regret.

How often can I respec and at what cost?

No respecs. You do get some points for respecing from quests and items called Orbs of Regret, but it's not enough to redo an entire leveled up build. There are many reasons for this, please don't turn this into another one of those threads.

What I can tell you is to do an easy, cookie-cutter, low skill build for your first build to familiarize yourself with the game, the tree, and don't get creative on your first run. A dagger ranger would be suicide for a beginner because, first of all, you need a good supply of intelligence to use daggers, not just dexterity, and rangers are a pure dexterity class.

I really don't understand the idea behind punishing players who just want to play the game

What I really don't understand is why some people consider actually playing the game "punishing", and then make suggestions how to change the game so that they don't have to actually play it. Bit weird if you ask me...
I don't think there should be full respects, but it would be cool to reassign your last point if you were to accidentally click on the wrong node if you have yet to leave the passive skill tree. Maybe make it so you can reassign all your skill points before hitting level 10.

Makes no sense.

It makes perfect sense. Full respec would make it possible to play large parts of the game "the wrong way" without having to try again. By respeccing you can skip all the content up until the point of respeccing. Without respeccing, you will have to try again, and play through the game once again, but this time with a more thought through and hopefully more optimal build.

And who decides what is "the wrong way"? If I choose to play like this, how can it be "wrong"?

Diablo 2 has 3 respecs, 1 after each difficulty and you can get another full respec if you do a really hard quest - I prefer this system over no respec.

IIRC in hell mode certain boss monsters had a chance at dropping a specific unique esscence. If you had 4 of them, they can be placed in the horadric cube and transmuting them would allow the player to respec again.

I believe there is a significant population of players that are turned off of having to redo all their points by having to start from lvl 1 again.

In my opinion if GGG put in an endgame questline or somekind of lengthy sequence to gameplay that offered a chance at a total respec would PROMOTE replayiblity. That way some players won't be intimated by the skill tree that much because they understand the hardest difficulty gives them a GOAL to pursue. Who wouldn't want to fix their character.

I shouldn't have to re-create a character I spent time building to correct minor point allocation mistakes, and the notion is ridiculous.

I'll look into guides and play with the calculator, I suppose. The fact still remains though that the system seems overly unforgiving and discourages early advancement. I'd love to see a change down the road.

You are walking through the unforgiving world of Wraeclast trying to survive.
You have to make decisions and have to live with them...the good and the bad.
That´s how the game is designed.

The first character is always the hardest to play because you will make a lot of mistakes and don´t have the items and orbs to compensate it.
So if you end up with a crappy build...try another one.
Discuss your builds with others to find the flaws.

Building a PoE-char is like building a MtG deck. You have to think about it.
This game is not a nobrainer. Some people might hate it for that.
I love it because of that.
