Even the best gaming rig can not run PoE at 120 fps min

I've played poe since open beta and even at then, I noticed how high end performance was a major issue keeping the game back and while there have been substantial improvements over time. The fact remains, PoE end game is too taxing for even modern rigs wanting to play at high resolutions and modest graphical settings.

My system:
"
ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1080 Ti AMP Extreme Core
I7 8700k (4.8 ghz overclock)
16 GB ram
144 mhz refresh monitor

My graphical settings:

My build: Bow raider with iceshot and barrage.

What I experience: High level maps will stay around 100 fps but will drop as low as 60 in the most intense situations - think beyond + sextant mobs + large pack size herald of ice shatters in a T16 map or shooting into an abyss or shooting into a breach or shooting into a harbinger. Certain maps seem to also perform really well (underground sea, most delve encounters) and certain ones not so well (haunted mansion). I also noticed that excessive amounts of items on the ground seemed to affect fps. For comparison, A gtx 970 will stay around 60 fps but drop as low as 30 in the most situations.

Is this as far as technology can go? Is there really no way to maintain 120 fps minumum or even consistently with any modern day rig without lowering my resolution?

Maybe the framerate is too much for the game?
I'm running it at a constant 60fps at 4k.
It's not a problem with the GTX1080Ti as that card is an absolute beast. I have the MSI Gaming X version. But I do have 32gigs of RAM, even though that's not causing your fps issues.
The game isn't really optimized for all of the shit to happen at once, so it's not your pc, in spite of what some may tell you.

No you hairy caveman.. Do you realise how many years gaming industry thinks 60fps/60Hz is the standard?

Try 144Hz monitor..rent...find someone who can show you gameplay in real on nice monitor and beast vga..

Progress for the sake of progress. I can see how FPS games benefit from a higher framerate, but the same isn't true for all genres. I can play Final Fantasy XIV (an MMORPG in case you're not familiar with it) just fine with 30 fps. It does look slightly less smooth than at 60 fps, but not distractingly so. Most of the time I don't even notice it.
I'm using a 6 year old laptop with a GT 650M. The machine cost me $1,200 back in the day.

Unfortunately, the laptop overheats in roughly an hour with POE. I'll be using it to heat my house this winter, gotta think outside the box.

Almost same here. I have about 5 years old laptop. I play WOW 25 man raids with no problem, also D3 is perfect. Usually when i play POE and having a coffee at same time then i put my coffe cup about 15-20 cm away from the fan blow out hole on the laptop side and my coffee never gets cold. Win-win. But every time when i open breach or strongbox i keep my fingers crossed.

The thing with poe benchmarks is that is totally reliant on the build and content you play. Playing poe as a sunder champion in mid tier maps is going to be a lot less taxing on your rig than a bow raider with HH in T16 maps with quad sextants high pack size blood lines shooting into an abyss/harbinger/breach/beyond.

With that said, what build you play and at what tier? Here's an example of gameplay for me personally - Does your gaming experience look similar? :

My oldest and main character which I still play in Standard is a Barrage/Ice Short Raider, so I know exactly how stressful it can be on PoE. Check my account. That character's name is PezShot.

That said, I have had the FPS counter up many many times and it still has never dropped below 85 fps on my computer. Unfortunately I don't have a way to record my gameplay, otherwise i'd get you a clip. As I previously said though, I found that turning V-Sync on greatly helped my video card to NOT spool like a jet taking off though, so I now stay locked at 60 fps and have 0 issues with PoE and my computer is much quieter.

I have my fps capped at 150 via riva. I will try alternative methods to improve performance outside of buying a second 1080ti.

Check out my LA build: 1782214
30,60,120 are just arbitrary numbers. You should custom tune your FPS to your individual preference.

Lower FPS is less taxing on your gpu. (Less heat)

Higher FPS is smoother and more reactive.

Find a happy balance and quit attacking other people for theirs. There is better stuff to argue about.
So you telling me that game with shitton of projectiles and particles and other thingies that fly at light speed every milisecond you are in combat is non working at smooth 120 fps?

Oh my, how suprisingly.

Slap a titan X in there. Problem solved.

titan ex is not very good for the price you would want to get 2 of them in order to make up for the price in performance but then you would pay double

do y'all not know that I was bein facetious?

it overheats because you neglected cleaning it on the inside for a long time. you can take it to some store to get it cleaned up and when you get it back it's gonna be running cool again
