I expect adults to be able to moderate their behaviour in a community. People who want to carry on,swear and be racist or offensive aren't acting like adults, they're being childish idiots. PoE seems to have a pretty good balance as far as I can see, not too much moderation but the ott stuff gets dealt with.

The difference between adults and children is not the language they use. In fact, children are often more offensive than adults. The difference is that if this game is for adults, then those people should be mature enough to not cry like little babies whenever they encounter something they deem "offensive."

Is swearing and vulgarity often childish? Yes.

Is it even more childish to get your feelings hurt about it? Definitely.

This is the distinction I'm trying to draw.

So when you say "for adults" doesn't mean "for twats" you're actually dead wrong. If you get offended by someone being a "twat," you're actually more childish than the twat.

Even as an adult, it is impossible to always know what will offend someone else, but on the flipside, it is always possible to choose not to be offended by it, especially when you have an ignore function.

R18 in NZ is pretty much reserved for excessive drug usage or gratuitous violence. Syndicate got R18 I think because you could make enemies suicide, but it got banned in Oz.

Basic horror/gore will rarely get out of the R16 rating system. Also the fluffy Kiwi's balance it out.

As others have stated, the names/phrases we moderate against are more for being racist/hateful/derogatory rather than vulgar. It is a mature game, but nobody should have to sit through unmoderated racism or hate speech, it creates a really negative environment.

This seems in contradiction to the several GGG posts in this forum encouraging players to report "offensive" names regardless of whether or not they are "hateful." And again, it seems that what is deemed "offensive" or "hateful" is narrowly defined by only one value set.

I always feel old when I have to explain my game manners ideology but...


I treat it like I would going into any other public space eg; shop, restaurant, gas station. Keep it polite and civil. Would you ever say " get me a fucking cheeseburger you twat."? Im thinking not, so why would you speak like that on a public forum?

In more socially secluded settings, bars, at home etc. I can curse like a sailor and insult my friends because we ARE friends and its accepted.

This really is common sense, it saddens me that some people ( you youngin's!!!) would need an explanation.

The people who receive such abuse can choose not to provide service, they can choose to ignore the offensive behavior, they can choose to have nothing to do with said person. These are all appropriate and adult responses.

In the world of this game, however, censoring the name or suspending a player is more akin to having that person "arrested" and is in fact childish. And yes, I do know that this is just a video game and nobody has to play it if they don't like the rules, but that doesn't mean I can't wish GGG would act more like responsible and mature adults in these situations.

We would rather that fringe/borderline cases are still reported to us so we can review them, instead of offensive ones not getting reported because people didn't think they qualified.

If you think that we should moderate the names differently or if you have any further suggestions, please let us know, we are always open to feedback and I'll read through everything in this thread.

Yesterday I went to a store because I wanted some vegetable and imagine the scene:

"Fuck you, these are not worth 5 a piece!"
"Of course they are you motherfucking piece of shit!"
"OK, but your mom is so fat she sells shade in the summer."
"Yeah, she actually does that, here is your fucking vegetable."
"Thanks, bitch."

I have never felt more adult.
