XP loss makes me want to stop playing.
" Kind of a silly example, Mario is still more hardcore than most games out there. |

Here's the simple truth.
This game is not for casual gamers. If I come home after a hard day at work, I can't play this game, even though I often want to, because I risk losing all of the exp I gained yesterday, which demotivates me further. I have to focus so intensely to keep from dying and losing hours of exp that it becomes a chore to play. I can't just relax and quest like WoW or D3. I can't just play a game of mid wars like in Heroes of Newerth. Point being, at a certain level, the game loses its fun factor for those of us that don't pour our souls into it. In the long run, this will virtually remove the casual playerbase from this game. Can only hardcore gamers sustain it? Time will tell. It may be exactly what the Devs want. Those of you saying "stfu and go play D3" should be careful what you wish for. Historically, games without appeal to casuals have mostly not been sustainable. I agree. This is a very old school technique to convince players that dying should not happen. I thought this went out in the early 90's!
Nonetheless, I would love it if they reduce the penalty slightly. Fighting the war against the AltF4Core! Hardcore is for whimps.

I switched from HC to SC willing because I realized I play solo 99% of the time and could tripple my wealth in doing so.
I have 1 death on my 80 Ranger due to suicide And 1 death on my 74 Marauder, which I got in his 50s by afking near a doorway I thought I had cleared because my daughter was upset. Guys, it's too easy *not* to die. The biggest shock I encountered when I switched to SC was the crazy death rate. When leveling up the Marauder (I made him on SC, so hes 100% SC raised)it appalled me how often people died...regularly. Don't get me wrong, it's SC, and you have more gearing choices, this is a good thing. But this game is generally considered to be "more hardcore" by the developers own admission (and their own actions). 1) Negative Modifications to the player / Positive reinforcement to the monsters via the Map system 2) -15% penalty to XP upon Death 3) An expensive respecing processes which makes most of us want to simply reroll altogether if the amount of passive respecs exceeds 30+++. What in god's name would lead you to believe that deep down inside these developers were really just soft teddy bears and intend to soften this game overtime to conform to your ideal game design? The 15% is fine, it creates a risk vs. reward aspect. DOES the mechanic have it's drawbacks in a game that still has bugs and desyncing issues? YES. SHOULD they remove the mechanic till those are fixed? NO. God knows there'd be no adding it back in even when the issues are resolved, there'd be so much damned QQ it'd be ridiculous. Well OP not every game on Earth is meant to be played with 0 penalties. In fact, a lot of gamers seek "challenge" , which, by nature, excludes the no-penalties style of some games. If penalties are too much, I highly suggest a game like World of Warcraft. In WoW, you are given a list of things to do and there is no penalty for any mistakes or bad play. Other games are similar, and those softer games are really appealing for the younger crowd!
However, games like PoE incorporate speed-running and min/maxing, power leveling, and the embracement of hundreds (if not, thousands) of mechanisms within the game. Most dungeons and maps are designed exclusively to defeat certain build types, or push the player to their maximum. |
