Got to level 50 or so on my first attempt. Desync into a pack of offscreened herald of the obelisk sprinklers. That death was surely my fault!

Second attempt I load up battlefront waypoint and dc out of nowhere (haven't even moved at this point). Been using internet all day so I know it wasn't my connection that was the problem. Log back in, characters in standard.

How anyone enjoys having to worry about shit like this on a constant basis is beyond me.

A couple of points. You desynced INTO a pack of obelisks? You probably mean you killed the pack then got stunned by the totems while your client shows you were walking and then you died... That my friend is no desync. It's a chain stun that didn't registered on your screen. If it did you would have seen yourself stunned and insta killed.Learn the difference..
Then you loaded into an empty area and disconnected and you found yourself in standard. riiight:P
How many MINUTES have you waited on your loading screen man? Because it actually takes 20 seconds for the immunity to wear off and then about one minute for the mobs to get to you:P
These threads from new clueless mad players that don't know wtf happened are hilarious...

I killed the pack off screen as I killed a different pack. My ice shot pierced the pack I was shooting, and killed the obelisks. I walk forward and out of nowhere teleport into the middle of the fucking obelisks and die within 1 1/2 seconds.

And sorry it's not my fault that PoE takes about 7 fucking years to load without an SSD.

first step to playing hardcore is accepting that you will die

QFT.

Learned from experience when I started Bloodlines as my first HC league. Eventually, not fearing death and being ready for it around every corner allows you to see the game more fully, instead of only the parts you think you knew already.

Also like people have said, if you aren't aware of every single thing happening on your screen, things like what pack you are killing + what mods are on area + whenever you lost any bit of life and why/to what + when you may need to reposition yourself + when you may need to slow down while running into an unknown/unexplored area so as to not be rushed by 1000x unknowable mobs + etc...then you will likely die, sooner than later.

Even if everything you did was perfect and right, you could still die to lag/desync/stuff happening you couldn't see coming. This takes us back to the first point: "accepting that you will die". Once this circle completes, it won't feel as bad and you learn to endure.
