Realistically how bad are the counter attack gems going to be?

I don't think you realise just how long 4 seconds is, especially in game. If it takes you 4 seconds to kill a pack, even as melee, you've done something seriously wrong. I'd suggest you head over to the build forums and pick out a new, non-gimpy build for yourself.

Edit 2: I actually reread your post myself and i just feel sorry for you, so i will explain what i wrote previously:

Timeline:

-Approach a pack, you are 50-60 ingame units away.
-You cast the totem, we will assume a level 17 Shockwave Totem, which costs 56 mana. Since you are a melee character, most likely using Hatred and some other aura(s), you will probably have a total unreserved mana pool of around ~100-150, being generous here. At this point it becomes way more desirable to manually cast enfeeble yourself, probably linked to blood magic, don't you think? Or do we play an entire different fucking game here?
-After casting the totem, you walk towards the pack, closing the 50-60 units gap, you lost half your mana from casting the useless totem so you cant even leap slam towards the pack. In the time it takes you to walk towards the mobs, your totem is already dead, and if it blinded anything at all, you are losing at least 2-3 seconds (being generous) of the blind duration just running towards the pack.

As you can see good sir, there is not a single sentence where i talk about how long it actually takes you to kill the mobs.

We'll know tomorrow, but depending on their scaling and keywords they can be pretty OP. Imagine they have the following keywords: attack, melee, AoE and offer a very decent scaling, you could link them with anything,
- Riposte,
- Melee Physical Damage,
- Multistrike (though I doubt it'd be working with triggers),
- Concentrated Effect,
- Increased AoE,
- Culling Strike,
And probably even more gems you could link with it. Herald of Ash and Hatred will be an obvious aura choice, BoR + Meginord's could be a deadly comibation. You won't even need to pick block nodes, 15% base from DW and 15% from BoR, enough to proc this shit every half a second against physical packs.

But, knowing GGG Riposte will be a single target skill that deals 50% base dmg of both weapons combined, that can't be linked with Multistrike and reserved 40% of your mana.

Well if the damage is bad you can always use it as a curse trigger, considering you can CoH 2 curses on a 4L with these.
From the wording Vengeance seems to be the better of the bunch, hitting in an AoE around you, lets hope it has a good chance/dmg ration.

It completely depends on how they tuned the DPS. Its not like flameblast or tendrils are amazing by the description, its just the damage is way too high comparatively and everyone uses them.

There is a certain defensive advantage in being able to link in life leech or life on hit to these new trigger gems that CWDT doesnt offer as efficiently. Unfortunately the Vengance is worded "on hit" which means it doesnt apply to spells?

I think one mistake was making 2 of them strength and one of them dex. Being able to swap the aoe on block (reckoning) to the single target on block (riposte) might give these gems a more functional spot in your gear if you can swap to the single target for boss fights.
