Why go melee when ranged does everything better?

I think the main problem is that the game cannot recognize if you are melee or not.
A spellcasting witch holding a sceptre and a shield, a RF marauder with RotP and Catalyst, a dagger spectral build... all those would probably get the bonus, too.


I did not say anything about basing it on weapon types, as it would bring up exactly those problems you just mentioned ...

Then base it on what exactly?

Let's say, I play an Arc witch with a 4L arc in the +1 gems helmet.
But I'm sneaky and use a 6L Heavy Strike in my Chest (that I never use).
Game sees "Heavy Strike" as my main skill and gives me "30% less damage taken"?

Let's say, I try to build a melee/spell hybrid. Do I deserve the bonus or not?
Let's say, I play a close combat spell build (only spells, but very short range). Do I deserve the bonus or not?



Yeah, that one is difficult ...

It could that if the game finds only melee skills on your char, it gets the bonus. If there is even one ranged skill, you do not.

Well the idea of a keystone i posted on the previous page addresses all possible exploits.
You lose all projectile and spell damage while gaining damage reduction.

Only possible exploit i can see is the use of RF with it, but there is no way to omit it.

Playing UP stuff can be fun ofc but when one of the 3 basic ARPG playstyles (melee/ranged/caster) underperforms by a huge margin, fun can lead to frustration real quick.

Melee is not the issue, ranged is.

Melee is performing vs the content at a respectable level imo.

It requires planning and thought before taking action.

Ranged is just over-performing. It's basically just "right click + pick up loot" move to next room/area and rinse + repeat.(woops i killed the map boss with my gmp screen clearer, oh shucks)

Some things you can do with riposte/etc:

Riposte + LGoH + Life leech + Mana leech

Etc. stuff like this could be very powerful in the right build.

Granted, you generally want to avoid damage in the first place. Melee can't do that, so we get insane leech instead of increased defenses.

I'm not saying this will or will not change the meta in favor of melee, but it has at least the potential to do so. We have to see what people do with it and/or how the gems actually function - do they benefit from crit? Can you reflect yourself with these? What keywords? Etc. There are still things we don't know.

Bug Fixes:
People were using cyclone for actual melee builds, so we nerfed it and made blade vortex. Also, we went ahead and made cyclone great for CoC casters while we were at it.

Making it an bandit reward is way clunkier, you would need massive regrets to respec into it for existing characters and such massive impacts on gameplay are usually reserved to keystones.
