Why POE have so many one-shots?
Short answer: Over Powered Sustain. Long answer: To stop a char from advancing the monsters have to kill him, or at least almost kill him, so the player will not try a stronger map with stronger monsters. But to kill someone they have to deal damage faster than the char can recover HP if the char can heal to full in a less than a second the monsters have to kill him in even less time(one-shot), SO OP sustain during the battle is the cause of one-shots How to reduce it? Reduce sustain during the battle is the only way to reduce the one-shot problem, if the monster damage is nerfed without a reduction to sustain, players will only go to stronger maps with stronger monsters and will continue to be one-shoted Of course we still need sustain, but it have to be restricted during the battle, the faster ppl is allowed to sustain themselves the faster monsters are gonna kill them, and if they can't kill you (or at least make you feel you're in danger), you'll just go to a stronger map where they can The first step to reduce one-shots is to remove insta-leech maybe Vaal Pact can be replaced by something, but the ability to recover almost instantly during the battle have to go The second step is to reduce non telegraphed damage spikes, all battles should have risks but if the risk is not due attrition it will only be boring or frustrating (it will be too easy most of the time with eventual one-shots) With a reduction of one-shots the size of the damage buffer will be FAR less important and damage mitigation (armor and evasion) much more effective GGG will finally be able to work on the balance of all forms of defense, to make them equivalent in power and this will allow a much greater diversity of builds Dernier bump le 26 mai 2017 à 07:57:48

Too strong/easy sustain is one of PoEs main problems.
No wonder it's lost, it's in the middle of the jungle!

Want the bad news? There are quite a few in that list that are not one shot, just rapid smaller hits that you try to derp through. Most of the big one hits are boss charge up attacks giving YOU the chance to move your arse out of the way. There is other stuff that isn't even worth mentioning. Ancestral Bond. There are a number of one shots, especially in rare maps.
Though, to be honest, if something is a "One Shot" or just a near instant burst of damage (Too fast for anything to be reacted to) then it's effectively the same thing. Huge bursts of damage are necessary to make high sustain characters (Notably, VP) die. But for other characters, it often feels like "Fine, Fine, Fine, POW DEAD" out of nowhere. This isn't always from a telegraphed attack either, sometimes it's like in a Breach and you get shocked by a Rare that only just spawned and hasn't even become visible and then you're hit by a bunch of attacks at the same time and you die. Or maybe you just happened to kill a porcupine at the same time as a couple of big hits made it on to you. Maybe you got unlucky and a couple of enemies crit you. Etc. Like, you can run perfect defences, 75/75 block, 20k armour, a bunch of evades 80%/80%/80%/75% resists and unless you're full healing multiple times per second, you're going to just randomly die to some unlucky hits landing at the same time. It's one of the reasons I really like the Malachai fight. None of his stuff, sans the teleport, are really "One shot" levels. Nor does he spam out a ton of attacks that may or may not hit you (Like Izaro's mortars, which I've seen do like 5% and 100% of my life in the same fight, with the fight mechanic disabled). He kills you by pressuring you with high damage attacks that if you're hit by multiple by your own inability to move correctly will kill you. You never get this "Fine, Fine, Fine, SPLAT" moment. But I imagine he's a complete joke to VP builds given that... |

From those named "normal effects" i consider maybe 4-5 to be valid, but still, very easily avoidable. Otherwise having more than 5K hp it just won't kill you.
You can ofc complaint about the game toughness over all, but there is a big amount of players for which the current difficulty level is a joke, not even playing or abusing the ES 15K+ pools with insta leech. Just to go over this list, put up those i consider kinda valid on top, but still majority are with 3-4s reaction time meaning you have to be very bad and distracted to consider those a critical issue.

Considering everything with quad dmg and double curse on the map as standard one shot mechanic is just pisspoor argument. Yes, i died to T12 Vault boss because he oneshot me. Reason? 5K life eva char, double ele dmg on the map and ele weakness , so when my res flask expired, considering uncapped res otherwise, i died to single hit. Did i had enough time to react? Depending on your level and and the level of the map you're running, prety much anything can kill you in a fraction of a second
POE's high sustain make the game feel much easyer than it really is, it's easy to go to a map far stronger than you should because you don't feel in danger most of the time To make you feel in danger without killing you POE's sustain have to be sevely nerfed |
