EXP penalty from death idea

Hi guys!

I was thinking yesterday.. what if there was a way to earn back a portion of the exp lost when we die? Like instead of losing 2 bars due to a lag spike (which im not complaining by any means, its just part of the game from time to time), what if we could run back to where we died and once we are either like within a close radius to our body or hit an item/object signaling that its our corpse, it would give us back like 75% of the exp we lost.

10% seems like a moderately harsh penalty, and i'm only level 84. But being less than half a bar from leveling and then dc'ing to death, I just was thinking about it and wanted to share.

The other reason I mention it is because prior to me coming back to PoE the other week (was gone for a lil over a year, left midway through warbands I think), I had picked up the game Grim Dawn to see what it was, and they had this exact mechanic in it, and I actually loved it. Sadly though, the game has no actual endgame content (only 2 areas that you can repeatedly pretty much haha), so once you max out at level 85, you have to make a new char or switch games. There were actually some really cool mechanics inside Grim Dawn, and I think if PoE dev's reached out to Grim Dawn Dev's, they could work together to greatly improve some aspects of both games. I honestly feel like if PoE had Grim Dawn's atmosphere and combat feel, or Grim Dawn had PoE's type of endgame content, that game (the joining of two awesome ARPGs) would be like the Neo of ARPG's. It would truly be, the chosen one.

What do you guys think? :) all positive and/or negative feedback is appreciated!! cheers and have an awesome day gents

i Like the idea about being able to retrieve some of the xp lost from cheap deaths. Especially ones caused by server connectivity issues.

Sadly GGG doesn't like people hitting max level, it is one of their poor decisions overall thinking that the final few levels should take forever to give a sense of progression.

The only problem I see with this is that there is no challenge in getting back to your body. You have already cleared everything up until the point in which you died. So your essential getting the penalty removed without any risk at all.

Maybe if there was some league mechanic where if a monster killed you, he possessed your spirit until you killed him. He would become very difficult to kill. Thus you would have to earn back your exp by risk getting killed again.

That actual doesn't sound to bad. Though obviously it has no effect on hardcore so... probably won't happen.

I think the most balanced death penalty is that you can no longer gain exp in that zone but can still play to get potential items/map drops once you hit 90+. Different strokes for different folks I personally believe 10% lost at 84 is negligible but for example when i died on my lvl 95 account (super tanky, 13k armour with coil, 7 endurance charges, fortify on main skill, 6.7k life ,the works) to god damn 2 fps perandus packs that is when I truly feel like /uninstalling :P.

but how would it not be a challenge if you just died to a screen full of enemies? if you had to click the object to get your exp back in the center of the mob, there would definitely be a risk because the mob might getcha again! but a risk I would probably be willing to take if I could dart in and dart out with a nice movement skill combo :>

He said why it isn't, because someone else can clear the map to that point or would have already done so if you are playing in a party.

@jusjev

Apparently perandus isn't being added to the core of the game, regardless you dont make balance changes because of "performance" issues. you fix those issues.

Remove MF from POE, make juiced map the new MF.
thanks goetz, but what if the one clearing the map dies as well..? wouldnt it actually be even more of a challenge if the person clearing dies as well?

Well you can put many of these things into what ifs, but currently as is you dont gain anything even if you can reclaim your body if it was such a thing, so anything that makes it possible to gain some back is "free" or additional. Considering the fact you dont lose your character and ultimately not that much XP when you die, even at higher levels (just dont fucking die really) it just cheapens a process that has already beem made easier multiple times.

More XP gain, faster clearspeeds, less penalty now then in the past, ect.

Is this because Dark Souls 3 just came out and you lose all your souls and have a chance to recover them by going back to your body?

10% is a harsh punishment 95+. As it should be, 85? not so much, that's a few hours of serious farming at most. (Assuming low clear speeds, low tier maps)
I dont like the simple find our body recovering exp, it give no challenge.

I prefer to give the player to regain exp via killing monster by giving them gain 50% more exp per monster until they took back all their 10%.

Example:

1. Player died = lost 10% exp = 100,000 xp
2. This exp is not entirely lost, it is send to a pool.
3. Player come back, kill monster that worth 1000 exp, monster will give 1000 exp + 500 exp extracted from exp pool = 1500exp. His Exp pool is now left 95,500 exp to regain
4. This entire process will keep going until player emptied his exp pool, then he will back to receiving normal exp rate.
5. Exp pool has a max exp cap. So if you are dying way too much, sending too much exp to pool without regaining them, when the exp pool is full, the next dead after it will be a true loss of exp.
