OH OH! I've hit the PoE endgame XP grind mountain and everything is boring

With Ascendancy right around the corner as I type this (6 days, 5 hours) I should be excited about the new content, new subclasses, new enchanting orbs, etc. Instead after reading other threads here I come to the realization that Ascendancy is not going to make the endgame xp grind and BiS gear hunt any better. There will be no wonderful alternatives (or any alternative) to what PoE is now in the endgame. We'll still have to rush through Normal and Crual, then cruise throught the first half of Merciless, maybe slowing down at the Act IV bosses (or even dieing a few times... gasp!) until we get the last passive point, and then skip the merc Belly of The Beast and go to mapping and grinding again. Making Labarinth runs for Enchantment Orbs had better be worth something (Talismans were a complete bust), more than a weak attempt by GGG to get us out of our map grinding zombie state on the xp path to at least level 90 (or 100 for the masochist time unlimited players).

After reading many other posts here of Alpha players on Ascendancy it is quickly becoming clear that the endgame map grind will not be altered to inject new life into the mountain climb toward the peak of a level 100 build. This is quite saddening and boring me to tears. Back in CB days (end of 2012) I truly thought GGG had the base game of what would be the successor to D2 after D3 flopped so badly. OB came and went and I still had very high enthusiasm for GGG adding super cool endgame features as alternatives to (but not replacing) map grinding. I even believed that an end to desync was just around the corner (any day now). Fast forward to now and I (and everyone else still playing) have had to accept the fact that GGG is not the wiz bang indie arpg game developers that would set the arpg gaming world on fire. To be fair there are some great features in PoE from the huge passive tree where any class can go anywhere and any class can use any type of gear (none of the class specific gear crap) to the multitude of skill and support orbs so that we can go build insane crazy to the max forever (yes, a bazillion skill combos are not viable but at least there are very few restrictions to our experimenting).

But here we all are in 2016 grinding map after endgame map for a few more XP to eek out another level up on the mountain climb to 100. There are very few "scenic overlooks" (fun diversions) anymore. Atziri is now commonplace and boring (if you can even get a midnight fragment to drop anymore). Temp league shtick such as our current talismans is a bust as the same overriding problem is killing the fun-to-play in PoE. That being the combination of lack of endgame alternatives to map grinding and the lack of any better gear. The level 75 cap on gear drops means my level 86 Scion is forever stuck with what I have found many, many levels ago. It has even been hinted at that as we level up the real quality of gear drops is slowly going down. I was thinking about that as I id'd another rare boots to see if it had a +30% speed increase mod only to be saddened (no speed or at most +10% speed). Let's see now, have I looked at 1000 rare boots yet with no +25% or +30% speed. Bad RNG or not, crap loot drop after crap loot drop after crap loot drop (ad nauseam) is making the climb to 100 just not the same anymore. The same is true for all other gear drops. With so much trash littering the Wraeclast landscape it's a wonder the island hasn't been declared a health hazard with all humans leaving it permanently. Wow, I didn't think anything could smell worse than Rhoa but GGG has found a way to top their fowl stench. Way to go GGG... NOT!!!

But on a more serious note, why does GGG insist that the mountain climb to level 100 be so boring and without anything else but map grinding? There have been many suggestions put forward (including myself) and to date nothing has gained any traction within GGG. GGG was (still is?) considered a great company in terms of dev/player communication but are all our posts and suggestions falling on deaf ears? Today, is GGG going forward with blinders on and not listening to us? Is it the same as usual catering to what the top of the pyramid players want most and ignoring the 99%? Is it what GGG wants GGG gets done just because they can and "to hell with everyone else"? I sure hope not but Ascendancy hasn't even launched yet and the negative postings are already out and even early access players (Kripp playing on Alpha) are commenting on it being boring and not worth playing.

I'll be playing Ascendancy to see if there is anything interesting in the new content so pre-release posts aren't putting me off from playing but another 1000+ endgame maps to grind for a few more levels does not bode well for much more play here. I'll never ever dump PoE from my hard drive but as a casual player if endgame xp grinding doesn't ever get an infusion of new things to to (endless dungeon, new quest mechanics, something... anything!) my time devoted to playing will continue to dwindle. I am sad. :(

Necessity may be the mother of invention, but poor QoP in PoE is the father of frustration.

I play all the standard temp leagues, have tried many dozens of skill combos, will find out if enchantments will actually be useful or just more filler fluff, etc. but the core play of the endgame to advance a build is still map runs after maps runs after map run (ad nauseam). Even a simple change to mapping that would allow us to place multiple maps (2,3,4) in the map device simultaneously to get to play a higher tier map for accruing xp faster would be welcome even if it's still mapping. Alas, GGG doesn't see it that way and Ascendancy is poised to not change that.

Seriously, if your pride is dependant on what lvl you are in Poe that's pathetic.

Good post OP. I feel exactly the same way. I was hoping the labyrinth would add to the endgame too.
Don't forget to drink your milk 👌
