Any MMO or game that requires you to do anything to unlock a boss/area.
I mean the uber-aztiri is literally just a rip off of the keys quests/farming organs into spawning for uber trist from D2.
If they didn't "rng gate" people would crash the value of her items so much, or have to make it where her unquies have a shitty drop rate.
OR - you know, the boss could be so hard to kill that only dedicated players would attempt. No RNG gate required.
However, for some reason, they love level 90 characters zipping through 68 areas in vaning hopes of finding fragments to try and find - another layer of fragments.
We just complete another cycle of complaints:
1. "It's rng gated expect for no-lifers with 10billion exalt builds and it's unfair."
2. "The rich and richer and get to sell her gear for a million exalts which they can run infinite amount of times since if you can beat it once you can beat it forever."
3 "The game is imbalanced because 2 builds can do the hardest challenge."
"Simple" solutions aren't simple when you factor people complaining.

I would like to state that you are all correct.
The problem is much complicated than it appears on the surface.
For me, the only really problematic part in this design is going through lvl 68 zones with high lvl character over and over like a bot, essentially wasting time to get those blasted fragments as there will be almost nothing else to pick up (or Xp).
Vaaling maps to potentially get fragments is a step in right direction IMHO, but it needs some tuning in my opinion. Zipping through 68 is still the way to go, however, it is endlessly boring.

To answer your question though, any random based item game gates content behind RNG, since you first have to acquire the gear threshold to complete the encounter.
Yep, gear should be enough of a gate. But here you can have the gear, but no content, cause RNGSatan said no maps for you.

Sorry, only my opinion here, but this latest trend with people complaining about RNG *gating* etc is a huge hypocrisy and nothing more than some greedy people who can't or don't want to play much, but still want to compete and have the same benefits as the others who devote a lot of time than them.
First of all, as someone who is HATED by RNGesus, I have to say that the RNG gating is a lie and an excuse for those who are bored trading, something which is easily done with poe.trade.
It is quite possible to participate to the endgame with/by:
-Trading the right stuff.
-Cheap builds which are accessible to everyone.
Even if you visit a, say, 76 lvl map and don't drop any other higher level maps in it, you can still earn enough to buy one.
This cannot be called RNG gating. RNG certainly helps a LOT but it doesn't shut you out.
And in the end, do you HAVE to be able to farm 77-80 maps? Don't the so-called "no-lifers" have the right to get something for themselves as well since they devote a lot more time to the game?
Also another great hypocrisy is when people claim that they would be happy if the game was skill-gated. The truth is that they would only be happy if the game was skill-gated to THEIR level of skill. There are plenty of such games out there, making content easy enough so that the farmville player can go through their "skill-gating" with everyone being happy with their superficial rewards.
As a casual myself, I am glad that this game had the guts to make it very hard to reach the endgame and I am sick of games who make their endgame content available to everyone, offering superficial rewards and pat you in the back, telling you that you rock and supposedly achieved something.

So to avoid boring trading 24/7, you need to trade? What.
Sorry man, but you're not getting anything at all. I've played since the beginning of Open Beta, every single league I'm forced into the same shit due to horrendous drop rates, CHAOS RECIPE SPAMMING, this is the most boring concept of a game, I'm just amazed over Path of Exile is the best ARPG on the market right now, it's actually sad.
Cheap builds? Then we go back to the other rant, forced into generic boring builds that people have played through so many Leagues by now, we actually want to experience this hidden "build diversity" that GGG claims PoE have, but we don't have access to it because the item that offers it, are gated by insane RNG and high prices on the market.
I never brought up Mapping, I typically END UP in the end-game mapping anyways, but I'm just getting sick and fucking tired of having to trade for weeks at times to actually get an upgrade because crafting is such a fucking mess, Exalts are rare as hell and expensive to buy, which leads up to having to purchase a mediocore item that's not even THAT much better than my current item, but will do until I do happen to self-craft shit, but that's ALSO completely gated by RNG.
I'm sorry, but there's a reason people only stick around for 1 to 2 months when new Leagues are up, it's boring as shit having to play (and with play I mean trade) same way every single League.
If you truly want a fix, reduce the bloody EXP you get at around 70'ish, it's going way too fast at that area.
Also, "glad this game had the guts to make it very hard to reach the endgame" - It's not "HARD", it's randomized if you get a proper item to progress with or not.
You're sick of games making endgame content available for everyone? You sure must have a lot of friend chap if that's how you feel about other people.
Rewards? I want to be rewarded of defeating a bloody suicide rolled map or strongbox, fuckyes. That's obviously a reason to get a bloody reward, getting a couple of scrolls is just a slap in the face.

I absolutely hate it when you can experience all content in a game just by learning and mastering the game mechanics. There should be more games where the developers create content and then only make it available to a tiny minority of the playerbase.
The concept of Uber-atziri is perfect. There are 3 layers of RNG (finding a corrupt zone, get all 4 sac pieces to drop, kill normal atziri for all 4 mortal pieces) just to get 6 attempts at killing her.
Are there any more games like this out there?
Comparing with other games I played:
Act 1-4 in 3 difficulties is "content".
Most other games just stop there, and you got nothing else to do (kill the last boss 2000 times to optimize your gear and grind some more levels? Sounds fun).
The map system (incl Atziri) is a bonus if you want to play on.
Hardcore gamers want something to do and can never stop playing, so GGG gave us maps.
"Here, have fun"
It doesn't matter that you don't have instant access to every map. Game's over. You're either hardcore enough to grind for diminishing returns in an unforgiving RNG based environment, or you stop/reroll/uninstall.
People are perverting this system by rushing through the three difficulties and considering only maps "the real thing" and anything below lvl 80 a waste of time.
That's not how it works, though.
I can see how it leads to endless frustration, but the fault is not in RNG or map design, the fault is in your misconception.

Well, maps are in fact the "real thing" since the Acts are that fast to rush through. Not sure if anyone would pay for PoE just to play these 4 Acts 3 times, considering you don't even complete Merciless Act4, because there's no real point to it.
So no, you're mistaken in this assumption.

First of all, if you were ALWAYS getting rewards after clearing a hard map then everyone would be running around with top gear being able to beat anything and that's it. Check the paragraph where I mention skill-gating. Skill-gating is not feasible and most people will consider it even more unfair unless it is gated for THEIR skill level. That's the truth...
Yes, not all content should not be available for everyone. The same things should not be available for someone who devoted 2 hours a day and someone else who devotes 12. How spoiled can one be to want such a thing? It's almost shocking!
And what does that have to do with how I feel about other people or how many friends I have for laughing out loud! If that was an attempt for insult, it was a rather failed one and only made you look bad mate.
Also you clearly misunderstood the paragraph you set in bold. I said that because you don't want to trade you use RNG gating as an excuse, but trading would get you out of your RNG predicament because you would be able to earn enough income to progress. I hate trading too but if a self-found character was able to "beat" the game then the game wouldn't even resemble an online game - there wouldn't be any need for economy, the crafting system would be redudant etc etc.
The discussion about the viable builds is obviously a different one and I already have shared my input on the Awakening builds. In a few words, imo, they have failed at making certain changes and build balancing and a lot of builds are not viable anymore as a result.
Also whether it's boring or not is a matter of VARIETY. I want more options for an endgame as well. But I don't want them to be more accessible than maps, which I am sure is what you had in mind. I just want more options for variety, not easier endgame accessibility.

Would you like time gating better? Like do Atziri just once a week? That's what most MMOs are doing to stretch their content :)
GGG banning all political discussion shortly after getting acquired by China is a weird coincidence.
