1 example of why PoE is very 'new player' UNfriendly

For the longest time I avoided Culling Strike (nevermind why). Look at a level 1 Culling Strike support gem. I don't give a rat's ass what PoE wiki says, the gem says "3% increased attack speed. 3% increased cast speed. Kills enemies on 10% life or less when hit by supported skill". Nothing about increased damage.

Now, here's what a level 7 Culling Strike gem says "12% increased damage. Kills enemies on 10% life or less when hit by supported skill". Nothing about attack speed or cast speed. Go figure.

If I had known about increased damage I would have linked this support gem long ago. Argh!

If I knew how to link stuff in a post I would prove it to you. (I have followed the instructions and I can't get it to work).

Sounds like the level 1 has 6% quality while the level 7 has none.
All there needs to be is a Billboard in act one, pratically next to the paper's around the beach line, with a Break down on everything, pretty much the Help Document you normally get with old pc Games.

for an example:
.
.Leagues:
.--------Standard
.--------Hardcore
.--------Temp Leagues:
.--------------------Warbands
.--------------------League Rules
.--------------------Warbands
.------------------------Warband Types:
.-------------------------------------Redblades
.--------------------Tempest
. Previous Leagues and information
.-----------------
.Monster Types:
.--------------Normal Types
.--------------Champion Types
.----------------------Blood Line:
.--------------------------------Frost Bearers
.--------------------------------Flame Bearers
.--------------Hero Types:
.---------------------Nemesis Mod:
.--------------Exile Types
.------------------
.Enviromental Active types:
.--------------------------Strong Boxies
.--------------------------Shrines
.--------------------------Ghosts

Just enough information for ppl to prep but not relie on, common information that is interesting to read and to show new players of the exciting discoveries the game has to offer while Adventuring, because lets face it, we have all read every balance patch and introduction to new mechanics either in previous leagues gone by, or old posts from the Team, which no new player would necrovigil or conprehend otherwise.

I cannot support the Direction of this game anymore due to the fact the PC verson of the game will be compromised due to the limitation of the console verson, which explains alot of the current state of the game.

The mechanics you are talking about are things that new players don't need to know. azoriuss explained the basics because that is all that someone new to PoE needs to know.

I completely disagree. Saying what a new player needs to know or doesn't need to know is setting up an arbitrary barrier between 'new player' and 'not new player'. PoE is very much a game that rewards knowledge of its ins and outs *before* playing, which is why I did days of research before even installing the client (that and I was waiting for a damn key). And that was in March 2012, when it was a VERY simple game compared to now. In fact, virtually all of the features I listed didn't exist then.

It's a moot point anyway. I could go to the devs and present this argument and I believe not a single one of them would disagree. Especially not the ones who make the decisions. I'm sure they're aware by now that PoE just isn't newbie-friendly. The lack of a tutorial beyond a few amusing tooltips at the beginning is almost an injoke by now.

But the juggernaut is rolling now. As it rumbles along, it picks up people like me, old d1/d2 vets who find these sorts of things compelling rather than dissuading. And it's always been my stance that as long as PoE picks up supporters who can afford to contribute to the overall 'dream' of the 'hardcore ARPG we've been waiting for', then all is well.

I can't really say how I'd feel about the game if I discovered it today. I think I'd still be overawed at the Skilldrasil, in love with the skill/support system, but quite overwhelmed by the various post-release features that have been building up. Hell, even now I don't adequately use Master crafting to its full.

So no, I don't think 'new players only need to know the very basics' is a good argument. I think easing them through the basics but discussing in depth each feature would be better. A tutorial on, say, strongboxes (wouldn't need to be more than 5 minute video, really) that fully explains them is to me superior to a tutorial that just says 'these are strong boxes. you can ID them. You can open them and monsters pop out. Kill them all and get loot'...that's just weak.

Each of the features I've listed do deserve fairly thorough explanation. And yes, the wiki does a great job of that. But this thread isn't about whether or not the wiki (and other third party tools) is any good or adequate. It's about why PoE is 'new player' unfriendly.

I have been gone for a while, managed to play a few hours of the Beta for The Awakening, but due to real life going well I didn't get much time. I came back fairly blind, thankfully most of the old league stuff I played through so I understood those mechanics.

I understand that there will be varying opinions on any subject two or more people discuss, and far more so on an internet forum. For me, personally, I want games to provide only the basic knowledge required to get started, I prefer to learn mechanics myself. I know there are many who would prefer to have a game walk them through everything, and I can respect that as well. My opinion though, is that those people will never grasp the mechanics the way someone who tackles the game and learns each mechanic as they go through it. Approaching first play throughs slowly and methodically. Analysing deaths/losses and understanding why they happened. Applying the same to victories. EVE is like that, although there are tutorials they only provide basic info(and I skipped them mostly) and the player is forced to learn through playing. One of the things I have absolutely loved about POE is that same sense of being thrown into the game and forced to learn on the fly, just like your character is thrown onto the beach.

That being said, as stated I understand varying opinions and would not be opposed to some more thoroughly documented tutorials, I just wouldn't want them to explain everything, or we would end up with forums full of people who know what the mechanics do but still die because they don't understand why.
And for the record, diablo has more flaws in the description. I think they did a pretty good job in PoE that wise.

Happy ripping :)
