1 example of why PoE is very 'new player' UNfriendly
Last night I got a Broken Crown, used about 15+17+7 currency to get it 4 socket linked with the correct colors. Put over the skill gems from my other helm (GMP+Firetrap+Increased Burning Damage+Freezing Pulse), resulting in good defensive stats all over, very happy!
Until...I port into a adventure zone and see that I no longer can cast Freezing Pulse, but I can cast Fire Trap. Yeah, that is logical of course, PoE-logical! Why does not items/skills A LOT more clearly give the needed info?! I can only guess FP can no longer be cast due to its projectile, or because when put in such an item with Cast on Death support skill, but then why can I cast Fire Trap?.. Yeah I know PoE is not D3, but come on, why not more clearly state the game mechanics in-game?! Or at least on the web page, but cannot find any info that states why this no longer works. This is ALL the official page says on CoD: Cast on Death Supported spells are cast when you die. (utterly void of any kind of info outside of just rewording the title on the skill, brilliant work, for a 7 year old) This is all gamepedia says: Cast on Death is a Trigger Gem and causes linked spells to activate when the player is killed. Note that this does not trigger on minion deaths. So, anyone care to enlighten me on why this does not work? And GGG; why not even remotely try to make this game more understandable to play, without a doctor degree in PoE-University?! Are you deliberately trying to push new players away?! Skill gems are HORRIBLY badly described (especially support gems), how they work and what can be linked to them or not, even if they support ALL linked skills or just the closest ones etc. This is not the first time I have run into similar problem situations, and neither will be the last, I bet... Sigh... Things that makes new players stop playing: - things like this, too little info on how to play the game - difficulty escalates too fast, act 4 is FAR harder then 1-3 - merciless is more or less not meant to be played without farming 24/7 or trading - playing without trading is more or less not possible, without stopping in about act 3 merciless, bye bye act 4 and bye bye maps = bye bye end game = bye bye game - HC is utterly unplayable without trading for uber gear |

" How about you look just a little bit to the right? ![]() See that first blue line? Taken directly from the gamepedia page http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Cast_on_Death You claim gamepedia does not state this, yet your inability to actually look at the page says otherwise. A lot of your complaints are somewhat legit but you also exaggerate a lot.
I play entirely self found. My first warbands character is lvl 79. I more or less hit a difficulty wall. Lvl 68 warbands occasionally kill me. But i yesterday swapped herald of ice with arctic armor. With that I might have enough survivability again to get to highe levels. About spells, I agree that often it's not very clear how support gems interract with spells but in case of cod it's very clear though. It literally says "can't cast supported spells". Freezing pulse has Spell tag, Fire Trap doesn't. Act 4 difficulty I completely agree. Merciless is really not that hard. If you can get through A4 cruel everything until Dominus is easy. And the highest level quest with a good reward, deshreth's spirit is still fairly easy to get too. All that comes after in A4 merci is completely optional. Hardcore is doable without trading. I made a second warbands character. A poison arrow ranger. Is now level 61 with just 2 deaths and just finished cruel malachai yesterday. One death from not being careful with piety's laser, which would have also killed me if I had better gear. And a death from a detonate corpse lockbox which probably would have also killed me even if I had better gear. Dernière édition par Sisaroth#5793, le 10 août 2015 à 03:25:28

There just needs to be player made guides or... even GGG implementing a tutorial for newbies... alongside quest markers (a line showing where to go) just to get the players used to the whole repeated quest thing (normal, cruel, merciless)
When i first started playing (AGES AGO) i was really confused, i didnt know what was what... the sockets were colour coded, but i didnt know what to link what with... i ended up at level 19 and stopped playing because i was overwhelmed as to how there wasnt much progression (i took intelligence nodes instead of the cast speed/spell dmg nodes we use nowadays) To be fair, noobies still make this mistake, because with other RPG's, attributes havea big impact, in this game, is miniscule in comparison to other nodes, but they dont know that. this are no noob mistakes, it shows ur total lack of interest for the game itself
all infos can be aqquired, there is a quest guide line on the map, the game is total linear and also accumulative part of the game is figuring out stuff [Removed by Support] What is the Matrix? - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-XDNGBTsi5U

The scale of this game is close to stacking every D&D 2nd edition on a table and say, "you have one week to read and understand it all".
I'm not sure if a true game guide could be written for this game. There's the wiki, but it's confusing at times to navigate. Welcome to life on Wraeclast, pick up that club and start swinging. There comes a time thief when jewels cease to sparkle, gold loses it's luster, throne room becomes a prison, and all that's left is a father's love for his child. - King Osric

Just started playing again about a month ago at this point. To say i've been addicted is an understatement. Either way, i'm a player who played Diablo, Diablo 2, Torchlight, Torchlight 2, Diablo 3... you get the point. I know the ins and outs of all these games and have invested countless hours theorycrafting for each. I had little experience with POE in its early days and even then I was set off to read countless guides, watch the entirety of ziggyD's video library, read hundreds of guides and still feel 'noob.'
But that's the fun in it for me. I want nothing more but to go back and reexperience the awe and complete noobness on some of my favorite games--Vanilla WoW, Diablo 2, Elder Scrolls.. and with that I think the vastness and non-hand-holding of PoE has its charm. Even then, I do think it's keeping a huge amount of players away from PoE--The game is mechanically sound with the release of Awakening and this is a huge amount of money GGG is losing out on. Still, I implore the devs to not "Activision" this game in favor of making it more consumable for the masses. Instead explore drawing these players into a game where they can truly learn and grow as a gamer with. Fun fun. |

A thing that I haven't seen explained anywhere is the fact that you cannot have two of the same support gems in a link. Well, you can, but only one of them will work, for instance two gems with +physical damage in the same link.
It is not clear either which support gems work with which other gems. I usually just try to put one there, and then look at the combined effect of the main skill. If it doesn't show up in the text, then I assume that it has no effect. Example. I wanted to put a +damage support gem in link with my molten shell, as the shell does damage when it has reached max damage taken, but that doesn't work. I cannot seem to boost the damage done by the molten shell in any way. The only thing I have managed to boost is the duration. I think it is too much trial and error to find out what gems work together. It would be nice if it was at least indicated in some way when a support gem is inactive in a link, such as changing its color. Then we could see immediately, that adding this gem has no effect.
