The real problem of XP LOSS.

There are 0 innovative ideas about XP loss. Is just copy paste from Poe1 but with less xp gain in maps.

Absolutely disaster and not fun at all.
Disappointed at least 80% of players. Not the death punishment but the copy paste rules Devs providing....
slow xp gain + bad rewards + pain + xp loss for majority players is frustrating, even if its their own fault which they wont admit.

these players dont know of the solution, they dont know that they dont know, and only refuse to make changes. they want the game to change.

so here we are.

the formula will just result in bad experience in reality.

xp gain should get a buff, somewhere in between poe1 and poe2. reduce map size, increase mob density. fix builds, just remove stunlock for now as it hurts most builds, especially those that aren't OP.

overall experience should improve, deaths would be less and people will cry less.

in the grand scheme of things, babymode should be implemented. serves as a tutorial and once people are ready for a challenge then they can upgrade.
`Spent 2 mirrors on my build, but I'm only Level 98.` LOL
`From just quick sweep of your characters, toxic rain, golems .. sure, non meta... sure.` LOL
`What are divs?`
My personal take on the XP loss thing is this; I enjoyed it when I was a kid and hit lvl 99 on my bowazon. It was an achievement and it took me an entire summer of grinding cow levels on repeat for 8-12 hours a day. Only the truly dedicated could achieve this by finding a build that never died since one death would sometimes mean DAYS of progress lost.

PoE is the same but its not 1999 anymore. I'm an adult, I have a limit of free time to enjoy gaming. If I'm playing an ARPG and I'm not finding decent loot and I occasionally die and lose all my nights XP there is zero sense of progress that evening besides maybe a paltry amount of currency. I don't want the game to be easy, as overcoming the challenge is satisfying and figuring out an awesome build is rewarding. However if I play an ARPG for 8+ hours or over a weekend and get ZERO progress, thats basically when I quit the game for the season or the league. (or forever)

And the thing is that number of hours exists for every player. There comes a point where even the most hardcore gamer would quit if they got nowhere in days, weeks or even months. The reality is that most players begin to feel the urge to walk away after far fewer hours of punishing unrewarding game play. Many casual players don't even get through the campaign and the xp loss hasn't even started!

And sure I could grind for better gear, or respec and try different strats but I only have so many hours before it just feels like a chore. There are thousands upon thousands of games I could be playing. Personally I find progress in these games is whats fun and addictive. But at some point the grind becomes so monotonous you actively begin to avoid difficult content in the game just so you don't feel like you're losing ground if you die. There is nothing worse than starting a gaming session and knowing after a few deaths you would have been better off if you hadn't logged on. Like I'd have more XP and potentially even more currency if my luck was bad. Thats a very bad feeling and one that would surely kill the game for me. Tweaking a build is rewarding if I make progress. If I make zero progress I don't even want to fix my build, I'd rather play another game.

Have you ever played one of those idle games like cookie clicker and all its clones? Progress at first is fast and fun and it slows over time until it inevitably becomes so slow you might as well not be making any progress at all anymore and then you uninstall. POE at its core feels exactly like that to me at high level. That's a big problem in my mind. The progression curve needs work.

So GGG should think about how many players will just quit never to spend another dime if they make progress grind to a halt after level 90. It could take weeks or months but if I'm always moving forward and having fun doing so I'll log on every day. If i'm not having any fun I wont come and whine on the forums, I'll just play D2R or Last Epoch or try out the latest season of d4. And any time I leave the game with a bad taste in my mouth the chance I'll never return grows. If I level a character to a point of personal satisfaction at lvl 95 or beyond it would be my choice to quit a league, Not a mysterious one shot that erased my weekend. Leaving on my own terms has me wanting to come back for more next league.

Nobody wants players in POE to perma quit. But its happening every single day.

Just my 2 scrolls of wisdom.

You make a good candidate for questions then since you have the perspective of one with time and little time.

I'm going to agree with you fully that not progressing (im careful to not say losing progress) makes a game feel not worth playing. I will also say, most people are not progressing their characters correctly or addressing problems and they don't know what they are supposed to do. These are your typical casuals. For me, levels are nice to have up to a certain point. But gearing and tree setup and gameplay is what constitutes the rest of it. The problem is, people see progress in terms of just XP. Progress to me is in terms of damage/survivability.

Since you sound more mature than quite the many I've come across, do you mind sharing your build? pob2 maybe if that's too hard, just mainskill; life/es/mana ; maxres/overcapped res; armor/eva/block .. and tooltip dps

if it isnt so hard.

im truly curious. i wanna see whats really going on. i promise i won't mock your build.

Complete dismissal of feeling like your progress is STOLEN and derailment into build discussion.

Lima, mate. no matter what the build is, DOES NOT MATTER, it can be "Immortal" per se. If that build dies at any point and DELETES/STEALS progress of weeks then its NOT FUN! That is the ROOOT of this discussion.

The abused exile mind cannot hold a coherent thought and maintain a focus on the discussion at hand.

He always need to bring his feelings, deflection, his entire life experience, just so he can cloud his mind from the abuse of weeks of progress being wiped by GGG.

Gaining exp has no skill, no achievement, just plain arduous grind, and losing it is nothing than pure disrespect of your time from GGG, because they are not the ones playing it.
For a game that's tagged as a "Souls-like" on steam, I'm surprised GGG doesn't make xp drop like souls in DS so it can be reacquired. That means you only lose the xp if you give up or run out of portals.

kinda why there's gear out there meant as upgrades. an upgrade that reduces if not nullifies deaths in realistic situations. if you wanna just use whatever trash that the game gives you because its truly mostly trash, then you'd not wanna buy items and people finding/crafting good items would not see buyers.

that which disrespects time is having far below par gems and builds and the poor guy who didnt follow a build guide uses one of those and has a difficult time with the game and dies all the time. any build should not default to 'miserable experience' while having just some being a breeze (LS, rake, edc some to name).

but then again this is what makes casuals casuals, they choose the path of pain, refuse the path of learning and switch to path of blame.

All this is solved by adding a retrievable "something" either corpse or soul, not like in D2 but more like in DS: you remain your equipment and recover 100% exp if managed to remove the ones that killed you.
Revenge system.

But maybe we should discuss if 100% restored or somewhat between 50-80?
Double down: have 100% recovered exp and a buff of +50% exp for 3 minutes by "Being avenged"
How about adding a little emotion and fun to the game?
