Direct x11 is NOT better than direct x9

Didn't expect this thread to blow up, but keep it up. Maybe GGG will listen.

I wonder why they are forcing people to play with shadows.
This looks like some sort of fetish for graphics and particle effect.

Chris Wilson talked about it. I will paraphrase:

"
We don't have a $10m triple-A advertising budget to spend on YouTube, Magazines, TV ads and bundle deals. The only advertising we have is our game (visually and game design wise)*. And if people play it with Quake3 potato graphics on (10-year-old computers with DX9) and show off their build on YouTube or Twitch or to their friend, in this state, this is in our eyes, not advertising. It's a really bad first impression. And first impressions in today's age count more than ever. Especially when we have to compete against triple-A advertised games with much bigger pockets for a graphics engine (eg D3, D4, Torchlight Frontiers, the new Warhammer Chaosbane).

Also on a personal professional note: I think GGG should not feel to be obliged to entertain the 1% which play with Dx9 shadows off in 2019, on a 10-year-old computer. If it can make the game better for the 99% by optimising Dx11 performance and visuals.

As they wrote in their Dx9 sunset post, this step was taken to optimise the engine and DX11 performance further/in the future. And not be held back by Dx9 limitations.

* ... And our community.

How old is that quote?? GGG is huge now. Most likely bigger than most of those games listed.
GGG has HUNDREDS of employees now and is owned by one of, if not, the biggest gaming company in the world (Tencent has been on a purchasing spree). You cannot argue that PoE is some basement developed game from the past. It receives updates/dev time, non-stop. Yet they neglect performance optimization and refuse to give us low detail because of... advertising??? How greedy is this company.
I hate it when people say they listen to the community. No, they listen to streamers. And with this issue, they don't care because they get people like you to pay for their high end PCs to be able to stream. We're most likely more than 1% of the community, its just that we don't have a voice, because of streamers not caring about this issue and people like you who just flame/troll/spread misinformation. How can you argue that "making it look good on twitch" is a good enough reason to screw over paying customers? It's a disgusting attitude.

@ Fallen_Enigma

(1) How big is GGGs Advertising Budget?

(2) Would you rather have GGG spend $1m USD on YouTube advertising than bringing you new content every 3 months (spending $1m USD on devs, artists, voice actors, story writers, etc)?

The only dedicated advertising/marketing budget that GGG has is (1) the community management and support team and (2) ExileCon 2019.

Further, Rory and Co, posting in the reddit and forum clarifying game mechanic questions as also advertising.

Chris Wilson said himself in Beaclast 37, they have to release new content every three months to pay the bills, the get them coming back, play the game and buy a new fancy Supporter Pack/MTX.

Chris also said GGG is still independent, is not carried by Tencent, GGG is still living off Supporter Packs.

The Tencent buy out was as founder & funder decision to cash out (like your everyday silicon valley startup is expected to do) after over 10 years of uncertainty (GGG was founded 2006).

2018, not long ago, and if not even before the Tencent buy out, in one of his (Chris Wilson) many interviews. I Joined: Dec 19, 2017.

This is not a 2013/2014 1.0 release quote.

The only advertising we have is our game (visually and game design wise)*. And the subsequent chatter about it. Hopefully positive. Positive, organic advertising. Bottom-up.

And if people play it with Quake3 potato graphics (on a 10-year-old computer with DX9) and show off their build on YouTube or Twitch or to their friend, in this state, this is in our eyes, not advertising. It's a really bad first impression. And first (superficial) impressions in today's age count more than ever. Especially when we have to compete against triple-A advertised games with much bigger pockets for a graphics engine (eg D3, unannounced D4, the new Torchlight Frontiers, the new Warhammer Chaosbane).

BTW, the first impressions thing, and the 'we are bringing our A-game to compete against what Blizzard will throw at us with D4' ... you can see that in Mud Flats (Act 1) 3rd Zone and the Fetid Pool, 4th Zone - new players will experience. They reworked those. Much better looking. And the new music. Cool stuff. They (Chris) said they will re-work old assets for 4.0.

I'm sure that you are playing this game not just because it has "cool graphics".

Adding an option to disable shadows costs nothing and doesn't affect performance of "99%", so your argument is invalid. It's like saying that possibility to choose resolution, anti aliasing or texture filtering decreases performance of other players.
Sure get a better computer, even though my card supports dx11 already, the game ran perfectly without a hitch before on all content. And the only problem is when I enter memory fragments or the memory nexus where the FPS drops to 15.

Luckily I fixed my problem by changing the textures to medium helped. but all the other settings did nothing.

If there are specific segments where FPS dies after a patch, maybe someone should take a look at it depending on how many other people are having problems.

Right now I think the culprit is mainly the memory fragment blue/black visuals.

If someone is well above the minimum specs, this should not happen.

Again and again, GGG said that shadows and effects etc are an important part to telegraph information to the player.

Shadows and effects are part and parcel for designing game mechanics like attacks: well communicated, not just with a grey pixel square, but with sound, animation, shadows and SFX.

Izaro's fight's (plural) do not come with a handbook how it's going to go down.

implying that only low end PC users are complaining about dx9 removal. people with NASA PC still complain about dx9 removal because they hate playing with shadow..

Well with that said I just saw that 4 of my friends already quit PoE.. RIP
Wait to see if this will decrease the amount of players in PoE.
Just look at some people downloading illegal program to remove shadow and other effects. Look what GGG did to the people. lol
