Why is Trading so Hated?

Trading is hated because the only way to reach the top of the ladder reqires heavy trading,

I see top players playing the game and investing little time (compared to actual play time) in trading. I don't know from where you got this false information.

Races like week/two-week/month are very good example of it - people are on top, because they're playing a lot, not trading a lot.

Yes, botting and RMT work just as well to quickly hit the top. I kid. Mostly.

I don't know that people hate trading, so much as they hate not having other avenues of progression outside of trade.

It's not like some deterministic crafting will reduce the efficiency of trade. Free trade will always be superior.
If this game wasn't based around trading it would be the best arpg yet. It's kind of sad because it's so close.
I have traded exactly one time since open beta. It was a completely normal trading experience and 100% confirmed why I play self found.

Trade arranged via messages out of game. No scam, no problem.

"Can I meet you in game tonight?"
"Sorry, I play on EU time, I need to log off in an hour. Cant you get on now?"
"Dang it, I'm supposed to leave for dinner!"
"Well, I have to log in a few..."
<postpones dinner departure to log in and complete the trade>

^^ This is why I hate trading. I did it exactly once (I got lucky and got a Mjolner, and it was the ONLY WAY to get a Romira's to go with it). I farmed for (literally) 4 weeks trying to get the item I needed, than gave up and did this one trade. Confirms why I play self-found.
You hate trading because you had to waste literally 2 minutes of time before dinner to do a trade with a guy in Europe that doesn't play in US prime time? Cry me a river.

For me, it's mostly this. I'd be fine just having to trade for very specific pieces of gear I want/need (like a unique). I do not want to face the choice of buying a whole set of gear, or spend weeks grinding to get something workable.

This is exactly why this thread has 10 pages, and why the OP asked his question. Different people will look at exactly the same facts and have different emotional reactions.

Why on earth does it seem that trading is so hated? Time and tiem again I see forum posts complaining about trading gated content, rallies for self found leagues and vehement hatred for the trading system as a whole.

From what I've read and my personal experience in trading for the occasional unique or upgrade, most of the people who hate trading are those who are pushing strongly for the endgame or are set on getting the best builds they can.

Trying to get a six-linked item usually needs way more orbs of fusing than would drop for a single person during their playtime and so they're forced to either trade for extra orbs, or save their currency and just trade for a six-link that someone else has crafted or had drop.

It also seems like some builds are heavily reliant on obtaining regular upgrades to their equipment, especially weapons, to maintain a solid kill speed. If an upgrade doesn't drop, or they have bad luck crafting an upgrade themselves then their only other option is to trade or put up with a killspeed that's umconfortably slow.

Due to the low supply of these items, people feel they can charge whatever price they want, knowing that someone will be desperate enough to buy it.

And then even if you have the currency, there's the matter of finding someone who has the item you're after, who is online at the same time as you and is also willing to trade.

Can't there be a better way? I see item in list and contact them. I'm in game... No problems contacting player because it only shows online players. Make trade. No sending a PM going player is online. no putting life on hold to make trade.

Why can't it just be seamless and easy. 1, 2, 3 done.

I believe the OP's question was answered on page 1 of this thread.

trading isn't my cup of tea, and I try to avoid it as best as I can - but it's the best means of progress in the game.

but the problem isn't the above fact. no.
the problem, is *everything* is balanced around trading, thereby making it mandatory.
the problem, is trading in PoE not only is the best means of progress - it's pretty much the only one.
the problem, is you can avoid actually playing the game almost completely, and will be at a better state compared to people who do.

the problem, is trade and/or "economy" is an optional "bonus feature" in ARPGs that have it - but GGG's twisted, boolean approach to design and balance, made the "ARPG" part of this ARPG be the "optional" one.

now couple that with people's disgusting scammy/ripoff nature and complete lack of manners + having to spam trade chat and constantly bump god-forsaken threads when selling + chasing above obnoxious people around when buying -> and you have a real fucking shitfest.
