Sorry, is this game supposed to be like Diablo?
" a great post by Qarl. Path Of Exile is a great game. Torchlight 2 is a great game. and as much as I hate to admit it, even D3 is getting better recently. I won't return to D3, simply because I'll never forget how crappy it was, and how Activision screwed with the Diablo heritage to milk me for money - but all three games are worth trying out to see which suit your taste. to me, TL2 and PoE are the best ARPGs around right now. also, if you are a Dungeon Master fan like I am, Legend Of Grimrock 2 is an awesome experience. While I do agree you don't play ARPG's for story, it's always great to have good story on any game. And PoE REALLY sucks at this department. I mean, I just finished merciless with my first character and had great fun, but a good story would've improved a lot my experience.
I am a lore addict in any game that I play, it doesn't matter how simple it is. I simply wanna know everything there is to know about that universe I'm "living" in. But PoE's lore is just a bunch of "something happened but no one knows exactly what". And the main plot is just as awful. At some point, I stopped trying to make sense of my Witch's actions and stopped reading the dialogs regarding the lore. And believe me, a game must SUCK for me to stop doing those things. I'm not saying PoE needs a Bioshock-like plot with an Elder Scrolls-like lore. It just needs a cliche fantasy story that gives the players an extra motivation to do the missions. And a lore that is interesting to explore. Also, the fact that the endgame maps provide ZERO extra lore is a huge waste of potential in my opinion. I really hope act 4 will enrich the lore a little bit, although the main plot issue is probably beyond repair. |

" A few care about the story in an aRPG. This genre all about bashing mobs, gathering loot, maximizing the character. Of which the motivation comes from. Been here for about 2 years, got no clue about PoE storyline at all. Shame on me :( This is a buff © 2016

" I understand that I am not a very common kind of gamer, but it's just so easy to make a compeling cliche fantasy storyline that it seems like GGG didn't make a lesser effort at it, they just didn't make any effort at all. I know story and lore will never be the reason to play such games, but it adds up pretty nice to the rest of the content. |

" ARPG is mostly about builds, monsters and loot - but don't underestimate lore. PoE has a pretty good story, but it lacks those larger-than-life figures Diablo games had. that's obviously harder to do when speaking of exiles and slavers/power-mongers, than of the eternal struggle between Heaven and Hell - but we don't have Deckard Cain, Tyrael or Griswold type NPCs, and Dominus and Piety (with all due respect) aren't Diablo and Mephisto. still, the game does a good job conveying its story, to those who bother reading - and I'm one who bothers reading. I enjoy it. better than Torchlight 2 does it, for example. TL2's story pretty much assumes you played TL1, and I have - but those who haven't are going to have a hard time figuring out what the heck is going on, why Ember is so important, and who The Alchemist is. then there's the small issue of the final boss:
spoiler
Alchemist should have been the final boss. what the heck is that Netherlord thing, and where the heck does it fit in the story? Ordrak made sense in TL1. Netherlord is an epic fight, but feels like a "bonus fight" more than part of the story, certainly not the culmination of it. in terms of pure lore, I think Titan Quest does it best. in terms of quality of characters, no match for Diablo. but Path Of Exile tries, and I'm disappointed you are ignoring its attempts, Torturo. I think Piety is good enough, but Dominus is pathetic as a final boss. And why the hell does he turn into a giant insect?
I bothered reading until it became clear I'd get no enjoyment from it. The only high point of reading in this game is in the Library, where they throw a lot of lore at you. That part is nice. Other than that, meh... It seems like the forces behind the Catalysm could be those larger than life figures. Queen Atziri is a cool character. Vaal culture as a whole has a lot of potential to be explored. Gemling Queen could also be worked with. The tools are there to make the 4th act at least a little bit epic, but I doubt very much it's a priority for GGG. |

" you need to distinguish between the boss' lore, and the fight itself. the fight itself is quite entertaining. I remember taking him on in day 1 of release, and immediately making a Feedback Thread here saying how awesome the fight is. but the story makes no sense. why giant insect indeed? it's something Dominus shares with the Torchlight 2 final boss. both epic fights. both make no sense in terms of lore. both games among the best I've ever played (and with 30+ years gaming, that is saying a lot), both have lore which leaves a lot to be desired. " I am kind of looking forward to finding out what happened to Kaom on his exodus. I hope they have some lore along the way in act 4 that sort of follows his path into the interior and into corruption. I also hope he is a good fight. |
