Why I can't pass level 80

If you aren't OK with writing this first character off as a failure and starting another one, this is not the game for you.

Aimlessgun is a noob, don't listen to him. Just keep banging your head against the wall. It is obviously the game that is the problem, not your build, item setup, or skills. Just keep trying with the exact same setup and don't try to level a new character having learnt from your first attempt.

Sidenote, the above is completely false
I choose to play the game on Hardcore because it encourages me to not make fatal mistakes.

It's simple. About once every 3 maps I die. Per 3 maps I gain about 10% exp. I lose 15% exp per 3 maps so in total I lose 5% exp per map.

Actually it's 5% exp per 3 maps, so in total you lose 1,67% exp per map. Not that bad after all ;)

Actually, my first char was following your cold caster guide. I had to give him up in the end, well start a new char at least..lol The build works, but I just went full glass cannon with him and I died all the time somewhere in the mid 70's and just didnt make it much further. Somehow managed to do the same thing with my next char but was able to get around it in the end. I will pick him up again soon though. Maybe start over so I got the full respec points.

Put in more reasonable and predictable reward curves and players will play more. Promise.

I bet against it ^^

Games like this need harsh diminishing returns on the upper end of the xp curve, even more for the fact of (still) limited content that is that low compared to the maximum possible char level.

Now imagine, if your progress becomes more predictable, you either would hit the wall (from the content range) just even faster, or - if "solved" like others demand, you'll hit the level cap (much faster than intended): both will lead to even more complaining, in the end just about missing content and/or challenge.

Personnaly I stopped leveling at level 82, not because it was hard, but because it was useless:
- most builds are finished near level 70 (after that, you just stack HP/ES/RESIST)
- High level maps are so hard to get, that there is no more challenge in the game once you hit level 80
Now i just stack IR/IQ and hopes to find good items, but after 2 months i am losing interest, most uniques in the game are piece a sh**, i reached the point where i don't even loot most uniques that drops.

you are wrong if you think hitting the level cap is the end of the story.

in Torchlight 2 for example, there is content designed exclusively for the max-level players: end-game uber-areas (primarily "Tarroch's Tomb"), restart the whole thing with your super-character but have all monsters scale to your level, max-level maps... and all of the above have a chance to drop the level 105 end-game sets and the very best Legendaries.

all this *before* we even talk about mods that add even more content and/or increase the level cap.

and TL2 is just one of many examples GGG should look into for inspiration, on how to do this at Path Of Exile's release or soon after.

meanwhile, all the "level-rushers" should keep in mind that it's still a Beta - and the content ends at a point long before the level cap (100).
if they have no problem with that like HvR, Kripparian, Aimlessgun and the rest of the "elite" - they can happily keep on grinding the same content over and over again.

but if you ever seek "shortcuts" in cheating or RMT - you should get your ass banned right off the ladder.

its not my point of view - I am very pleased even when never hit the cap, like in many games before - but its what some (many?) others expect/demand/bash actually.

its a possibility, but its not the actual state of POE, which even hasnt the mainline finished. And of course it did not mean, that a proper solution from another game would be the 'right' one also for 'our' game ^^ - just take alone the fact that there are no item sets (and even more not for endgame) by design/decision...

true words, often forgotten/ignored.

but sadly, there will always be a market for such things, and even the lowest chance on making profit from this will lead to corresponding offers too...

I can't even make it past 73, mostly becasue it beceomes ultra boring not getting gear upgrades and just farming the same zones over and over, and since I play solo I can't afford maps.

Maybe my 20th alt will be different ;D

Well, it is a grinding game. Farming is part of that. I think the new changes to the zone levels have made it so much easier to get to level 80 without even touching maps.
