Don't bet what you don't mind losing. I've never complained bout it and once took like 4000. Pay the craft bench or buy them outright (probably best deal on a common unique like CJ) if you're afraid to lose it.
For like my first 3-4 seasons I never 6L anything sold my fuse and bought 6L feeling it too risky. (that was before we had 6L recipe which I woulda used)

I feel your pain. This league I tried to six link a Vis Mortis, didn't manage. You did break the one important rule for self-linking: *Never* gimp your build to do it. You should have bought a second carcass jack and linked that one, while leaving the 5l on your wife's character alone. If you manage, great and sell the 5l. If you didn't, at least you can still play!
If you want to be most economical you should stop everytime you hit a 5L and sell it, as it'll help you get part of your money back. But I CBA to do that.

I just 6-linked 2 items yesterday under 250 fusings total, one being carcass jack, a second one this league. Your bad luck balances out my good luck, it seems.
