Maybe what you're looking for is Path of Diablo mod for D2.
"You've got to grind, grind, grind at that grindstone..."
Necessity may be the mother of invention, but poor QoP in PoE is the father of frustration.

Hello. I loved Diablo 2 when I was younger and tried out Diablo 3 and was really disappointed. I'd like to try PoE but don't want to sink in a bunch of hours only to have the same disappointment, so I'm going to list the things that bothered me in D3 and ask if these things exist in this game as well.
My number one problem with D3 is that you can't make your own build if you want to participate in the end game, which you have to do if you want any loot or rewards.
What I mean by this is that in D3 class sets are the only viable "builds". Each class set has specific legendaries designed to be used with that set so you can't even really choose your items after picking which set you want to use. The sets boost a few skills from the class and everything else the class has gets ignored. Example: Demon Hunter has a set that boosts the damage of one skill by 40,000%. If you haven't played the game, just look at it like this. If a 40,000% damage increase is needed for a skill to be viable in end game play, and you can only get it from using a set, and only a select few skills have sets boosting them, then the majority of abilities available to that class is locked out.
1. So is it possible to make your own build in this game? I am sure there are top builds that out perform other builds by a fair margin, but can you enjoy end game without them? In D3 you're locked out of end game completely if you don't use the 3-4 viable builds each class has. Some classes only have a single viable build.
2. Is it necessary to use a guide, or can I wing it? If I wing it is it possible to end up with a character that cannot participate in end game at all, i.e. a character that is useless?
3. What is the end game in POE? In D3 it's doing 15 minute time trials of a proceduraly generated dungeon. It's not very interesting. What do you do when you've cleared every act in PoE?
4. If I play I want to play something similar to a bow Amazon in D2 or a Demon Hunter in D3. Are there any beginner guides I can follow that require less grinding to get but are still viable for whatever the end game content is in this game?
5. In D3 you only really use a single damaging skill. Every other skill does no damage and is just there for supporting your single damaging ability. There may be a few exceptions, I haven't played every single set for each class, but this is how it was for every DH build. Is it possible to use more than just a single damaging skill in this game? Example, can I have an area of effect skill for clearing trash and a high damage limited or single target skill for high health enemies?
This game has no end game. At least not on D3 style with limitless rifts. It's static. And boring if you have a decent build.
1. yes i made like 20 builds and guides. there is literally 1000s tho
2. I recommend a guide to start to learn basics of game
3. End game sucks here. majorly gated. and terminal. D3 rifts are 100x better.
4. yes use search and search for cheap in title in ranger forum that will reveal lots of bow guides requiring minimal investment
5. here we oly use 1-2 skills too. Its a loot game not a high APM game starcraft 2. Skill here is build, trade and movement.

Hello there. In POE, build diversity is purely to combat the boredom of play style. The most important things to remember in POE are the followings:
1.) minimum of 100k damage per second
2.) minimum of 5k hp or 8k Energy Shield
3.) Capped resistances
4.) life leech+vaal pact (this combo is more superior than max block and evasion)
5.) plan for a level 90 character
Don't concern yourself of what build you are going to play and if that build is end game viable. You must focus on how can you reach a minimum of 100k DPS and have a 5k minimum hp ? If you are killing things slowly in POE you will get bored easily and you won't even have the appetite to finish at least 5 maps per log-in.

1.) Actually, DPS doesnt matter much when you clear maps, your "coverage" matters far more. Having 200k DPS with skill like Cleave is much worse, than having 50k DPS with skill like Split Arrow. So, stop with that DPS bullshit, PoE isnt some sort of MMORPG, where DPS truly matters.
2.) 8k ES are actually as good as 8k life, if you use 4.), they're just much easier to obtain (at least, before 3.0).
3.) True.
In fact, you can NEVER have enough life/ES in PoE. The more you have - the better, period.
4.) This combo is strong indeed, but there are tons of builds, that dont use it, and rely upon other sustain mechanics. For example, RF builds rely on massive regen, various summoners/totems/etc can rely upon massively reduced ES recharge, Necromancer or Aegis Aurora builds rely on life/ES recovery on block, Slayer relies upon non-instant life leech (withough VP), etc.
5.) True.

1. It does matter. The minimum 100k dps is for boss fights because trash mobs are trash. Prolonged fights due to lack of DPS against dangerous bosses will translate to more chances of dying. If I have 200kdps, I will fight all dangerous bosses in the game with great confidence. If I only have 50k DPS, I will skip guardians, shaper, and other dangerous and tanky bosses because fight is too long. I will play underground river maps all day with my 50k dps.
2. 8k ES is much better than 8k life because the es build can use a shield. Non-rf 8k life without kaom is very difficult to achieve while having a minimum of 50k DPS. I doubt anyone can come up with a 111 points passive tree that will result in 8k life and a minimum of 50k DPS without the classic 2h+kaom.
4.) It is not only strong but the strongest face tanking ability provided there is a buffer for 1 shot hit. You don't need to play specific class to enjoy the leech+vaal pact combination.
