D3 player wanting to play PoE, have some questions.

1: Yes, do whatever you want

2: No but your first few characters will probably suck if you don't use a guide. Once you're used to the game you can hit level 50-60 in a matter of hours which is usually enough time to realize if a character is failing or not

3: Maps, Atlas, they're sort of like rifts but you just run randomly generated areas with different mods you apply to them. There's end-of-the-end-game like Uber Atziri but not a lot reach that very often

4: Sounds like any Ranger build

5: PoE skills can range from using 1 the entire game, or using every slot available in combination. Depends on your build
What about playing path of diablo mod for diablo 2 instead? I heard it is great, and also free if you have d 2 already.

1. So is it possible to make your own build in this game? I am sure there are top builds that out perform other builds by a fair margin, but can you enjoy end game without them? In D3 you're locked out of end game completely if you don't use the 3-4 viable builds each class has. Some classes only have a single viable build.

Lot of player in PoE would answer yes, you are locked to use the 3-4 popular builds that going with x or y league but it's wrong.

Due to the complexity of Path of Exile and the theorycrafting's depht this game has you can more or less end with viable build no matter wich skill you are using, there will be some issues to achieve that tought but it's still possible and even common to see somebody building something new and more than viable that no one expected from a week to another.

So basicly there arn't " ultimate " build, there will be always something than no one discovered at a x or y moment that will be potentialy become what we can call a top tier build.

The whole game is achievable even with viable build some of the hardest content has been done with REALLY unexpected skills.

There is the difference with d3, PoE is enough rich in term of content to satisfy anybody.
Consider aswell game is inviting players to builds different characters that will fit well with x or y content, for example you may want a dedicated character for bosses killing, one for fast clearing etc ... it's totaly intended by GGG, sooo don't expect to do the whole game with ease with only one character ( tought it's possible with some skills and the way they are used ) just be smart and build few characters to optimize time and efficiency :)

Welcome to PoE hope you will enjoy the run !
Hf :)

Welcome to PoE :)

Just wanted to write a lot, but.. there are answers for you here allready, so... what to say? D2 was my faworite, expecially D2:LoD, so many hours played... D3 welll, yes i got D3, D3:RoS, but there were no such fun... so I found PoE.

Just play it, make mistakes, re-roll chars and enjoy the game :D

And for last thing - you liked archers, so there is Ranger clas, BUT. Almost every class can do anything, better or not. So my favorite char - now on HARDCORE btw - Maradeur Chieftain, using Bow/Quiver, and 2 Siege Ballista totems :) So far so good :) Yes, there is build diversity here :)

Median XL 2017 is better, path of diablo is just the base game with some slight alterations.
I know exactly what you mean, OP ;) Same here, old Diablo veteran.

Yes, you can invent your own builds. All the "top cookie cutter builds" have been "invented" at some point. And they change a lot. Or you combine whaterever you like. It´s really up to you. Once you´re very specialised in one build it might be better to start a new character than to spec and gear for a different build.

If you just start playing without a plan in mind, you will most likely run into a brick wall at some point. Then you can and you will adjust your gear and build until you find something that feels good. When I first started my witch back in 2012/2013 I had no clue about the game and it also was in beta at that time. I just build around minions, skeletons, zombies etc. and adjusted my gear and skills once in a while. It´s probably a 95% different build today and still a pure necromancer ;)

You can even come up with totally crazy ideas, combining intersting item mechanics and you´ll find a fun build for speed clearing or a super hard hitting boss killing build...who knows.
With 3.0 (the new addon) around the corner, no one knows what the new top builds will be, although you will certainly be able to count thousands of different builds again.
Just want to add another thing, that is don't get too attached to a single build.

GGG expect you to reroll and try different builds (and will sometimes nerf existing OP ones to the ground too), so embrace change and try something new.

You have plenty of character slots for a reason.
The plan is simple: win! If you do not win, you did not follow the plan

Hello, I had the same experience and PoE is far better then D3. Regarding your questions:
1. Yes, you create whatever build you want
2. There are guides and for starters you must read what is what
3. The end game is most challenging part. It's really amazing and hard. But that's the intriguing part.
4. If u like bow builds, Ranger class is definetly for u. Even the ranger looks a bit like amazon of D2.
5. The bes u can do in PoE is to have 1 - 3 skills in my opinion, but u can have as much as u want to try them all. It depends of what u like to create.

The first thing u should do before playing PoE is to read here: http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Path_of_Exile_Wiki
Remember, my friend, that the expectation leads to disappointment. So don't expect anything from anyone, even from yourself.
it's heading in the same direction don't bother
You have to learn to play this game. Even some good players don't realize this. The same character with the same equipment and stats will not be played the same by a new player as it will by a skilled player.

You need to learn the fights and learn how to react to incoming damage. Players who don't, typically complain about "one shots" or "over-tuned" encounters. That's GGG trying to make their game challenging for players who have learned the skills needed to survive. The players who play like it was D3 don't get it. In D3 it's all about equipment and character stats. Numbers. Much less so here.
