D3 player wanting to play PoE, have some questions.
Hello. I loved Diablo 2 when I was younger and tried out Diablo 3 and was really disappointed. I'd like to try PoE but don't want to sink in a bunch of hours only to have the same disappointment, so I'm going to list the things that bothered me in D3 and ask if these things exist in this game as well.
My number one problem with D3 is that you can't make your own build if you want to participate in the end game, which you have to do if you want any loot or rewards. What I mean by this is that in D3 class sets are the only viable "builds". Each class set has specific legendaries designed to be used with that set so you can't even really choose your items after picking which set you want to use. The sets boost a few skills from the class and everything else the class has gets ignored. Example: Demon Hunter has a set that boosts the damage of one skill by 40,000%. If you haven't played the game, just look at it like this. If a 40,000% damage increase is needed for a skill to be viable in end game play, and you can only get it from using a set, and only a select few skills have sets boosting them, then the majority of abilities available to that class is locked out. 1. So is it possible to make your own build in this game? I am sure there are top builds that out perform other builds by a fair margin, but can you enjoy end game without them? In D3 you're locked out of end game completely if you don't use the 3-4 viable builds each class has. Some classes only have a single viable build. 2. Is it necessary to use a guide, or can I wing it? If I wing it is it possible to end up with a character that cannot participate in end game at all, i.e. a character that is useless? 3. What is the end game in POE? In D3 it's doing 15 minute time trials of a proceduraly generated dungeon. It's not very interesting. What do you do when you've cleared every act in PoE? 4. If I play I want to play something similar to a bow Amazon in D2 or a Demon Hunter in D3. Are there any beginner guides I can follow that require less grinding to get but are still viable for whatever the end game content is in this game? 5. In D3 you only really use a single damaging skill. Every other skill does no damage and is just there for supporting your single damaging ability. There may be a few exceptions, I haven't played every single set for each class, but this is how it was for every DH build. Is it possible to use more than just a single damaging skill in this game? Example, can I have an area of effect skill for clearing trash and a high damage limited or single target skill for high health enemies? 1.) Yes
2.) If you are new to PoE you might want to look up some beginners guide/build. While you certainly can (and eventually will) do your own build, as a beginner you will not have the knowledge or experience to make a solid build. 3.) If done with all the acts, the real fun begins: Maps They are instances of areas with various different mods on them and a boss at the end. These mods increase the quanity or quality of items found. Each map is 'adjecent' to other maps of higher levels, and eventually you can progress through the tiers (1-15) to reach some even harder bosses. 4.) No experience with those classes. But you might take a look at Shadow or Ranger forums. 5.) Well it's perfectly possible to use multiple skills (and certainly done by some builds), generally you only have one 6 Link available. |

Mechanics questions aside, it seems to me that the OP would benefit from membership in a guild:
https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-forum/guild-recruitment-seeking-players There are several specifically intended for "new" players in need of guidance. Better to get that guidance from friends than from random threads on the forum. Aside from builds, they can help with crafting and such. =^[.]^= =^[.]^= basic (happy/amused) cheetahmoticon: Whiskers/eye/tear-streak/nose/tear-streak/eye/
