How to farm exalted orbs?

Yeah it's really random, I got my first -- and only -- exalt opening a cocoon in Belly of the Beast merciless. I've, obviously, gotten none in maps regardless of how much quality and alchs I spend on them. Oh well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Edit: Oh and for all the psychology majors out there: yes, I do make sure to open every single cocoon I come across after that event; and for all the math majors: yes, I know, it's completely fallacious and goes against probability theory. Pure RNG drop is what makes PoE so skillful.
The real hardcore PoE players and the elites sit in town and zoning in and out of their hideouts trading items. Noobs that don't know how to play PoE correctly, kill monsters for items. It's pure fact, it will never change.

Play the game, do anything that involves killing monsters.

There is only one way to increase your chances of "farming" exalted orbs: IIQ (either on gear, maps or farming content above your character level).
There's nothing more to it. Sometimes, just sometimes, you should really consider adapting to the world, instead of demanding that the world adapts to you.
