Offensive Character Names...
Yeah, that's not a good metric. I'm completely comfortable telling people I have a character named FucksusChrist, but I'm sure a lot of people would find it offensive. But being offended doesn't actually mean anything. Racists are offended by interracial marriages, but that doesn't mean we have to listen to them.

" You would be completely comfortable telling that to your new boss or your girlfriends parents that you are meeting for the first time (just examples) while not knowing anything about their beliefs and humor? Well, i don't think your character name is the main problem here... |

It just becomes another mini-game within the actual game... some play to see how close they can get to the line without crossing it, others play to see how many they can report in an hour. It was absolutely silly on the RP server for Dark Age of Camelot.

" You are using an extreme as your example. I will agree, there are some very rare extreme cases that should be handled; like racism. However, they will force you to change your name for far less severe cases. For example, my character named CommitSuicide was not allowed to have that name and I had to change it. It does not offend any group of players, it does not have racism, no swearing, and yet, it still required a name change. Basically, if your name isn't kiddie friendly it's going to get changed. And this is in the context of a game with nudity, gore, brutality, and all of these things. It's like, having a Rated R game that doesn't allow swearing. It makes no sense to me. If I made a characted named "IWillTortureYou", as a reference to Piety or even some other game reference, I'm confident GGG will require me to change it. But seriously. Look at the piles of dead bodies in Lunaris. Think of Tolman and his torture. The names that aren't allowed baffle me. It really makes no sense to me. " Do you even know what the word reference means? |

" I get what he is saying. "IWillTortureYou" being a reference to Piety torturing people/experimenting on people as seen in several areas of the game. So the name is a reference to something that Piety is known to do. |

" By the same logic you could call "ILoveShoes" a reference to piety because whenever you meet her, she is wearing shoes... |

" IWillTortureYou is a reference to Piety specifically because she is a major story character who tortures people. This is her role in the lore. If her role in the lore involved shoes, then yes, your example would make sense. But that's not her role and as such your example doesn't make sense. It's not a major logical leap to associate torturing with Piety because that's what she is known for; human experimentation which generally involves torture. However, it is major logical leap to associate her specifically with shoes when nothing in her story highlights shoes. How is this not obvious? Piety does not torture people for the sake of torturing them. The torturing is just a side-effect.
Also it's Piety torturing people, not your char. As a reference it stinks. |
