Well done Devs, you killing crossbow playing style...

bow players need to craft arrows using resources picked up from farming mobs, otherwise delete the game. no point to create a game like this.
I started the game with three fellows and decided to go with crossbow style. Now im the only one that didn't quit the crossbow style but for how long?? Despite this i reached level 94 becouse of the guys i play with and trust as a team. But seeing all the others killing a boss in 2 sec makes me wonder what a hell im doing with this style of play? Its becouse i play 20+ years and i love it but in this game first time i hated! I have the feeling that Devs will disappoint us in 2.0 patch becouse all they care is stupid leagues and new content. If they dont fix the balance i can't wait for the next patch. I'll come back in year maybe then ill see serious changes. I Expect at leat to see the raise of the damage of crossbows if not the option of quiver bonus.
Crossbows are a weird but fun, from what i can assume they are meant to be a heavier chunkier variant to bows thus i think that's why we don't get a quiver?

i honestly don't know they feel nice to use once you get 99% of the reload speed nodes but can still feel like they stutter a bit but not enough to ruin the experience for me, desyncing bosses with my build did that for me lmao.

gonna repost this; I wrote it quite some time ago but I don't think anything has changed.

Thesis: The Crossbow, as a weapon, is poorly designed and needs a rework/tweaks.

About me: Have a lvl 71 gemling merc w/ a lvl 17 ranger I made when my merc was in the 50s. I completed the compaign in 75 hours and was lvl 65 when I finally did. The TLDR for why it took me so long was crap loot drops/loot slamming, but this is not what I am posting about.

The Setup: I decided to roll a Ranger (currently 17) after getting frustrated enough w/ my merc to drop the game for a few days. I eventually went back to my merc but I kept coming up w/ questions as to why ranger felt so good while merc felt so bad. I did some thinking and comparisons and would like to present my findings.

Back to Basics: I was fortunate enough to get a bow and xbow base at the same level/ilvl for comparison, so I immediately busted out my spreadsheet and got to work. This is what I found:

Adv. Composite Bow: 36 - 61 physical damage, ilvl 51, req 117 Dex
Adv. Varnished Xbow: 19 - 78 physical damage, ilvl 51, req 65 str/65 dex

When I looked at the stats side by side, something seemed off, so I dug a little deeper and this is what I found:
For the BOW, the minimum damage value is 59% of the maximum damage value.
For the XBOW, the minimum damage value is 24.36% of the maximum damage value.
While the XBOW has a higher maximum damage, it is only 21.79% higher than the BOW
The XBOW is a 2H weapon, while the BOW is 1H. This allows the BOW user to equip a quiver for even more stats.
The BOW requires LESS stat points than the XBOW (117 vs 130, or 2/3 stat nodes)

Given the information above, the only thing the XBOW has going for it is the skills it comes with. A wider damage range introduces more uncertainty into combat so even if the max damage is higher, you're less likely to hit it consistently and skill damage is based off of your hit damage anyway.

Playing Around: I've played merc for at least 50 hours and if I was to sum up the class in one word it would be "clunk". The Xbow ammo skills are clunky and fiddly to use (grenades are fairly straight forward; this may explain the popularity of grenade builds). Ranger flows much better because when you push the hotkey, the skill goes off. This is not always the case for merc:
To use an ammo skill:
Hit hotkey to switch ammo
(reload/switch) animation occurs
IF ammo is at zero, hit hotkey again
IF ammo is NOT zero, left click to fire

now lets compare to ranger:
Hit hotkey to do skill

This doesnt even take into account the clip not being full so you go to do the skill and have to reload while getting your face gnawed on, or if you're holding down the left mouse button it reloads but doesn't fire so you wonder why you're not firing, or even the worst case scenario of dodgerolling while trying to reload; good luck with that one!

One last point I noticed is that the Crossbow is the ONLY weapon that has a reload timer. In this case we can get double screwed by reload AND skill speed.

Conclusion: The very mechanics surrounding the xbow are what is holding it back; it does not have enough advantages to offset its disadvantages. One of these needs to change - it either needs to become a more powerful but janky weapon w/ better scaling skills, or it and its skills stay as is while the mechanics get smoothed out. Some options here include but are not limited to (nor do I suggest doing all of these as that may go too far)
Bringing the minimum damage up (definitely to at least 45% of max!)
Increasing the maximum damage (maybe, but not too much; 5 to 10 percent or so)
Increasing the number of 'effects' on 2h weapons (6 for 1h, 8 for 2h; this could be a very interesting change across the board)
Buffing the damage% on xbow skills (an idea, but no recommendations or examples)

If you've made it to the end of this post, I thank you for taking the time to read it even if you don't agree with my conclusion.

TLDR: Crossbows are poorly designed from both a stats and game mechanic perspective. It needs to be fixed.

+1 agree with all you said especially with the comparison between Bow and xBow. No reason whatsoever to place obstacles for one and allow the other to run smoothly

TLDR: Crossbows are poorly designed from bot.

Totally agree. All the passive points need to be reworked again. If not the bonus of the quiver then the damage of the crossbow should be double the damage of bow. Spending passive points in reload time and damage is something that need double points of passives compared to other weapon style game.

That's explain why lot if people quited and moved to bow style. This is not just balance issue, this is punishment to those who play with crossbow style.

I hope one day Devs will understand their mistake and correct the injustice.
Like the lad up there said with the min/max damage - think about that when you grab a quiver with a 30% damage enchant AND a 40-50% more damage with bow skills and THEN you add a multiplier of 280% from a widowhail up to 305% if you're feeling rich and if it's got +2 projectile skills you're getting 8 projectile skills from a 1 handed item vs the max of 7 on a crossbow for 2 handed. With my levelling uniques at level 14 when I chuck on my Rondells my lightning arrow was doing like 1500 damage or 1700, something round there.. vs my crossbow I think that with the same items and level was somewhere round the 300 mark. Both level 1 uniques as weapons. Unreal comparison.

Check vids of arbiter etc - you can default attack and kill him with a bow end game but with crossbow you're shooting to shock, maybe reload, swap to another skill then rapid fire him, hope he doesn't unshock or you have to re-rotate and reload. The mechanics on a lesser weapon are more complicated and risky, again, absolutely wild.

Why would you want to stand around reloading with the 50/50 stutter issue on it, shouldn't need to put points into reloading when its literally the same thing as a fkn bow, they should BOTH need reloads OR both be auto-fire weapons which makes more sense in a zoom-zoom ARPG like this one.
One thing I think would fix xbow damage on some level lies in the 'lucky' status. You can get this for lightning damage, where it rolls damage twice and takes the higher result. I think having something similar for crossbow damage could REALLY help.

Doesnt come close to all the damage stacking you can do with a bow, but it could close the gap a bit.
