End of an era at GGG; Tencent is calling the shots and gameplay is now secondary to $

This isn't how being a shareholder works.

they don't have instruction about what to do from tencent, however they are subject to all the rules and limitations of being a publicly owned company, which drive a certain prioritisation of annual profit returns to maintain the share prices.

This would be true regardless of who owns the shares. The only difference would be without the money from shareholders there would be no PoE2 and far smaller content updates for PoE1.
Maybe point 4 is wanted ... or even owned by ... ah well.
Unfortunately for me, I happened to be in the poe1/2 discord voice chat when the vid dropped. I gotta tell you, I've never felt so ashamed & had so much second hand embarrassment as I did listening to complaints as I did that day. It was like watching children cry because they could only have their cookie at 11 instead of at 10.

Love poe1, love poe2 (regardless if it's there yet) but GGG as a company & specifically Johnathan, ChrisW & Mark as a trio are exactly what a studio needs. People lose perception so fast it's not funny. 45 days ago, these 3 were the unsung heroes of the world, revolutionizing gaming & community engagement. Today, they fell short of perfection (which they mostly have been for the last decade, just look at their release schedule) and now they're suddenly these movie villains. Reddit's even asking for Johnathans resignation.

These guys & this studio did something I've never seen any company, much less a relatively small game studio which could use the revenue a lot more than many other AAA companies: They made skins transferrable between games because it was logical to do it for their players. These guys own up to everything they do wrong and even then they mess up - which, btw, they do 100x less than 99% gaming studios, similar to Fromsoftware.
If that doesn't tell you where these guys heads are at, idk what will. This whole ordeal made it look like there's some conspiracy or evil intentions and the online world eats it up and makes a huge unwarranted drama out of it.

In the next 30 days we'll have 0.2 & in 50 days we'll have 3.26. The world won't end & I guarantee you the same people crying to the skies today they're refunding and their world is over will not only survive but will also go 180 and shower praise in 30 and 50 days.
tencent bought GGG almost 7 years ago.....

I have always been of the mindset that if you build a quality game, revenue will come. Of course this puts me in opposition to literally every AAA game maker out there that has the philosophy of "milk the customer as fast as you can and never mind about gameplay."

I wonder how many people on this forum would be surprised to know what these big game companies are like? I worked for Electronic Arts for 2 years and was astonished to find that maybe 1 person in 20 played ANY kind of video game and among management that dropped to maybe 1 in 100. All they care about is milking the customer and that is primary. That is why Bungie went to garbage after it was acquired by Activision, Ditto Blizzard and now ... apparently ... Ditto GGG.

In an effort to milk the customer a bit more, Tencent wants more transient D4 style customers. Their entire calculus is marketing vs revenue. They could care less about whether the game is boring, end game design problematic, campaign long and boring. They have decided.

1. Long campaign means we hook the player to buy more loot boxes / cosmetics / other MTX and by the time they find out the end game is bad they have probably already been milked as much as possible.

2. Longevity is irrelevant, these people only care about the next quarter profit. To these executives D4 is a phenomenal success. Gamers mostly agree that it is a poorly executed travesty and stain on a good franchise to gamers.

3. Killing POE1 was a given the moment they made 60m on early access keys. Also by extension other givens are that POE as a free to play game is no longer a thing (since they have proven people will pay for it) and that the priority is money. Don't be surprised if there is now pay to win in POE2 before it comes out. Gamers might see that as messed up but game companies love it on their revenue projections.

4. Engaging gameplay, bots spamming RMT and other things are no longer a priority. If it doesn't contribute directly to revenue it is no longer a priority.

POE2 is a total mess right now and not because they didn't have the tools to make it right but because boneheaded decisions are being made in the senior offices.

As for me, they got me. I loved GGG so much that I bought the most expensive pack for POE2. I am a long time GGG fanboy. But then I hadn't been keeping up with current events since my work and home life are chaotic and I didn't know Tencent had bought a controlling share in GGG. If I had I probably wouldn't have hit that purchase button. My bad.

Now you all know where things stand. If you expect POE2 to ever be worthy of the name, you are going to be disappointed. I would love to be wrong on that but I fear I am not. As for POE1, it is dead. The execs have decided a crowd of flyby transient gameplayers are more valuable than the long time customers and have kicked them to the curb.

For all you flamers loving POE2 and thinking its the best. Most of you have never even tried POE1. Go play it while you can, get a player to maps, beat maven. Come back and tell me how good POE2 is in comparison after i see your char in your profile. I will still disagree but then you will be talking from an informed position.

To GGG, if you can, stop chasing the $ and get back to making good games with the lessons learned over the last decade. If Tencent wont let you then ... well you have lost me as a customer and i doubt I am alone but you have also lost any claim to "vision" in games.

Long campaign doesn`t force you to buy loot boxes. But grind-yes.
I'm just waiting for the Real Money Auction house and the Pay To Win EXP boosts you can buy with real money. oh and Shark Cards. While leaving the game as it is and full of bugs.

Game has been out for 3 months now, and we have ZERO prommiced content that was supposed to be in 100% by 6 months.

GGG decided not to hire more people to develop POE1/2.

They literally did. They doubled their studio size since announcing PoE 2. Please don't just say things...that's what the OP did. They also literally told us they have been hiring even more since just before the EA and during the EA.

people look at this and conclude tencent is running ggg for profit and all ggg themselves care about is making money, not the game?

really?

I mean.....it makes sense when you look at all the faulty and straight up incorrect information in posts like these. I still can't get past how awful the first 2 points of the OP are: longer campaign = more money, and longevity = irrelevant. There is zero critical thinking and understanding going on here.

GGG Only care about maintaining "The Vision" to the detriment of their players.
