What is the average level of deaths in P.O.E?

Rtsson, thanks for the comment. Your initial post really got me wondering. I knew my death count was high, but suddenly I wondered how it really was compared to other players, especially those in my situation.

I die when I have to look away to see what my son is doing, or move QUICKLY from the computer to stop him from doing something bad, or when he grabs my mouse hand because he wants daddy to play with him NOW. He's more important than the game so deaths are expected.

The replies have been very illuminating, and some of the other self identified fathers who replied don't even count their deaths anymore. Amongst the others there seem to be a lot of people who don't die much at all, plus a good number who die a lot more than I do.

In between those extremes are people who die a lot on one or two characters, and then simply stop once they learn the levels. I'd personally die less with a QUICK pause function, but some things are choices you have to make . . . Getting "object x" away from my son NOW or let it set for a few moments is a no brainier in my book. I try to make up for it with well designed defensive skills that can usually survive a few moments without me. lol

Of course some of the responses are nostalgic for me too. I fully understand the gamers who feel "elite" or think more than X deaths shows a lack of skill, or doing something wrong. I remember being that guy. I look back fondly to the days when I was playing D2 on players 8, with no points spent anywhere, on hardcore, all the way to Diablo just to give myself a challenge.

At my age (or stage in life I guess) though there seem to be only three types of gamers. Those who stop gaming altogether, those with "Warcraft widows" who probably should stop gaming, and those who strike some sort of balance between family and gaming. It's not always easy.

I tend to think of it in game terms. Once I was a level one gamer, as I gained experience the challenge of gaming went up, until now it's a lot harder than it used to be. lol. Overall the responses make me feel pretty good at how I'm managing. :)

Vaal Oversoul was where most of my deaths occurred on Merciless, I actually ran out of portal scrolls and gave up and found a group doing it instead. I don't like that he has no cool down on his abilities. He can be a cakewalk if you get lucky or an impossible to defeat nightmare if he chains the lightning ability multiple times in a row (1st beam always seems to hit).

I didn't even attempt Piety solo after the trouble I had on Vaal, I just went straight to a public group.

All his attacks can be avoided outside rocks.. where you granite. Once you get Vaal's mechanics down he isn't so hard. Rocks will still hurt though and can surprise you if you run out of granite charges.

Merciless rocks almost one shot me and I was being helped by EpicBaddie who streams. I felt so useless and embarrassed but once he got the kill I felt AWESOME!

I've died 97 times. I'd say a fair bit are desynchs but I've definitely deserved a good amount as well.
Is their a command to list how many times you've died? I saw the 499, is that accurate? Or is that a photoshop o.o

There* Mr. president. You would type /deaths in chat to see your death count.

As for myself, I play HC. I died on my first few characters in the mid 30-50s- two witches and a shadow. One lvl 15 death due to being impatient and charging into a mass of Merveil clone monsters in late act 1. Two in merciless at lvl 55, trying to be a stubborn bitch and wanting to full clear everything, regardless of my low level status (lol Heilrake and rhoas). My current at 64, starting maps and doing very well.

Overall about 5-7 deaths total, not counting random miscellaneous characters here and there, or race attempts for fun. I have learned from each one, the main thing being, not to just charge into shit and to take things a little slower. Avoid side levels in merciless unless you are absolutely confident in being able to solo it. I also do not, like most HC players, overlevel like crazy. I find that boring, and will always tackle a zone at most at an equal level, frequently lower (see above regarding side zones).

It's ironic how I enjoy playing HC in APRGs- in every other gaming format, I often play extremely aggressively. I played Warcraft 3 at a professional level in Korea growing up, and I always favored hit/run tactics and constant aggression in RTS games.

Ive been playing PoE for 2 months know(hc only started in hc for the challenge and thats what it is, a challenge xD ) and i havent died once on my char's, but i did however die 2x in races cuse of underleveld desync once(got set back into the woods surounded by monkeys and was instant down --> that char had 240hp i killed merveil with 160hp x)) the second time i died in a race was because of RNG dual shock effect by first 2 lightning attacks i encountered, pretty much nothing u can do at that point xD.

I think many people die in default league because of the "meh" function. u die, u go MEH and u go again, instead of having a hard blow to the face(like in hc when ure char dies lvl 60+)
they get a little tab on the fingers and go MEH lets try again.

Another reason is the ingame balance and prefered playstyles. As we all know PoE is stil in beta, and in this beta life nodes are mandatory leaving not much choice left to skill to.
So people who want to go and play "gun's blazing" are getting punished more frequently then slow players (like me). It should be noted here that they decide to punish themselves, by playing "gun's blazing" in a game that was directly designed for hardcore players.

Ive played MP10 on diablo3 from normal to the last difficulty on HC to challenge myself, only self found, and u learn quite a lot from setting challenges like this for ureself.
One of the things i learned was "keep ure map control" what i mean is clear an area step by step, when u get flooded by mobs NEVER run to unexplored area's but repace where u have cleared, leaving u room to safely kill of the mobs one by one. Also play like u have 1 life, this is very helpfull to ure mental reactions towards incomming damage. When u think every hit wil kill u, u are more likely to respond faster and mitigate all damage even if it very low, maximizing ure potential to survive drasticly.

My first char ever on PoE is on cruel act2 atm, and i havent died once(he's hc), even without knowing the mobs i would encounter( i freaked out below that warship where u have flicker strike bandit's for the first time i was like WTF IS THIS AAAAA "RETREATTTTTTT")
I would urge any new player on HC to ask the comunity for help(they helped me a lot) to "slow"play the game where needed, try to outlvl all area's for about 2 lvls maybe more if u can spare the time, and dont underestimate the mobs. a zombie is just a zombie, until he critical strikes u!
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes
Level 19 shadow died, chamber of sin, no light resist in a group, lagged.

I've not died since then.

80 Ranger, and now leveling a RoA Marauder, he's 30 atm. I do not forsee dying anytime soon, or at all if I can help it.

I've died close to 600 times. I have bad latency and I'm sure this makes desync more likely. I'll never be able to play HC.
I've died 2 times since the start of OB.

Once at 77 to map brutus (retarded situation)
once at 62 (my own lack of precuation)

Hopefully won't die again till at least mid eighties. I like to think i learn from, not only my own mistakes, but the mistakes of others in my party. Makes me giggle to think that people still die to voidbearers etc, my first time in docks when i saw someones hp go from 100-0 in half a second, that certainly made me pay attention to the game!

edit: why not logout rather than sit there and take the 15% exp cut? (in the case of op who knows hes probably going to die if he goes afk. 2 clicks prevent hours of wasted time)
