What is the average level of deaths in P.O.E?

I have 23 deaths at level 37...i'm expecting a skyrocket in that number once I hit merc. I die very often. Mostly to charging mobs.

Interesting results. It seems like there is extreme variation out there. Some people have hundreds of deaths, others just a very few, and the other parents out there . . . well the statement that strikes my mind is that they don't even count deaths, it's just a normal annoyance.

Even people with few deaths list things that I am concerned with as a parent as the cause. Needing to be away from the computer without a pause function tops the lists of death reasons, followed closely by desynch issues, and then at the bottom simply having a lack of knowledge about the character your building or gameplay mechanics.

Very interesting.

You can get around each one of those (desync being the hard one to avoid).

Pause function -> right click Portal scroll, left click portal. Near instant pause function.

And of course, game mechanics and knowledge simply come by playing the game or reading the forum.
Life is tough... but it is tougher if you're stupid.
no idea how you guys do it, but i respect your love for the game nonetheless

Gotta say, if you're dying hundreds of times, you are doing something completely wrong, maybe playing the game at all is what you're doing wrong. I literally can not comprehend how somebody can be so bad that they die hundreds of times from lvl 1 to end of merciless, even on your first character, it just doesn't make any sense, it means you must be dying like 10+ times each zone. Are you incapable of learning from mistakes? Seriously.......

Anyway, when I first started playing I died a few times at about 30 on HC, then I got to 63 on a marauder just before OB, since then I got to 63 again and died to a retarded mistake, and now I am on a 77 duelist, 2-3 somewhat close calls. So yeah, not many deaths.
I'm sorry, but the majority of people who suffer regular deaths due to actually difficult mobs is quite astounding to me. The only monsters that deal death in this game are the Big Bosses. And the only reason they do is because they lock you in to 'closed room' environment. And even then, most of those bosses still don't follow you around too quick if you want to run and hide for a bit.

I'm not really sure if some people have ever had any experience of 'fighting' concepts. Even the greatest military leaders in the history of the world retreated when they knew they couldn't win. Retreat is just as much a valid 'fighting' concept as 'attack'. I suspect a lot of these deaths are people running into mobs and refusing to use the 'run away' concept, expecting a huge DPS to somehow counter 15 small knives being trust at their throat...

Well, after reading this thread as a player who's only played in Hardcore, I can honestly say I'm a bit shocked at the death rates and the struggle people go through to grind xp in the endgame. All of my deaths but one were due to my complete and utter idiocy or ignorance of the game mechanics. My first ranger died in its 40s with almost no HP nodes. My second died when I tabbed out on the ledge to look at the forums (lol so stupid, I know) My third died when I went in to the fetid pools on merciless before even clearing to the ledge. My fourth died when I came home from the bar one night trashed and decided that I could just facetank. Did not end well.

I'm currently running a level 77 ranger with zero deaths and I just thought that I would share some of the things I do to minimize my deaths. First of all, 95% of my node choices are either defensive or on the way to a defensive node. I avoid maps with dangerous mods(pretty much all curses, reflect ele damage, sometimes extra damage mods, twinned hard bosses etc) and I always use a spell totem with summon skeletons + faster casting to absorb a large portion of the aggro from swarms. In terms of gear selection I almost always opt for +HP and resists before any other offensive stats, the only exception to this would be +ele weapon damage on certain items, like the belt. Movespeed on boots and having a quicksilver flask to run away and kite effectively is pretty important. Also a granite with +90% or more armor is pretty much required for huge physical hits. I opted to use iron reflexes because it makes the hits more consistent.

In terms of the way I play, I don't rush into rooms and prioritize certain monsters that I deem to be dangerous or annoying, generally this includes things like - archers, alchemists, and of course necromancers. I think its extremely important to learn the mechanics of sub and act bosses, Vaal oversoul is a shining example of this, especially for melee characters its pretty much required that you can predict / react to what vaal is going to throw at you.. you just can not afford to be hit with that mace past normal difficulty at all. Obviously this is a play style that is designed for and basically required in hardcore, but I think that these are also considered basics that can and should carry over to softcore. If you focus on only DPS and rush in without a plan or an escape, you can expect to die quickly and frequently.
@Pietas_
