Why can't POE be played offline, like D2?
Offline SSF makes too much sense.

I was initially going to make a thread, but given the amount this has already been asked, discussed, or rather argued about, by overzealous fanboys, arrogant (wannabe-)GGG mouthpieces, and naive apologists.
Here's the mostly unedited op; This game is at the same time exceedingly fun, and exceedingly frustrating. The latter due to 1) massive lag spikes; 2) inconsistencies in the speed at which things play, load, render; as well as; 3) the connectivity- getting dropped, then getting dropped on login trial, getting disconnected whilst returning to town because it can't load every fancypants cosmetic effect that has to load from each squatter there; 4) there's more.. Calling it an online single player game is a bold lie, given you're not experiencing the world as such- trade chat spammed with `traders`, price-fixers, yadda-yadda; the other channels barren, the up-to-50k ms lag spikes upon town entry only force you to hate the online-only aspect of the game moreso. I'm not the only player, so despite 1) being alone in an instance, it's not a single-player game, because 2) I don't control anything; 3) I have no local files. GGG says upfront- fu, I hold the bread and the knife, give me your cash. Also, you really can't make an argument about cheating in a single-player game- you're selling a game, not a (read `your`) guide to ethics and morality in video games. Every loading screen being 10-30s, unless having been previously loaded (-towns). I dunno how much of this is due to the online part of the game, not easily quantifiable without testing on differently setup machines, but I'd bet my kidney that getting an SSD, or new laptop altogether with more RAM, a better graphics card, etc.- wouldn't fix the issues above, ameliorate sure, but it's a band-aid on a gaping wound. 'Just get a quantum computer, bruh.' is not a solution. My laptop has run bigger in size, and newer games, at higher settings at better, and more consistent fps- all this offline, of course. tldr; I and, surely, many others, would greatly appreciate a dedicated offline experience, as others in the thread have pointed out- even a 1.6. version would garner them lots of cash, more than what each would pay in tabs or cosmetics maybe. I want local files; I don't want to be battling (and dying to) lag; be unable to pause- ffs, in nearly every single game I can think of, one can pause; don't want to be unable to disable graphical features I don't deem necessary to the experience, and hardware-taxing (this in regards to the limited options in the menus present, e.g., no: low texture filtering, filtering, shadows etc., just to get consistency in fps); I don't want others I don't interact with, or want or plan to, to significantly hinder my experience. D2 and its mods has local and online files, and it works. The cheaters online, I think, are still a problem at times, but this is due to the security somehow- regardless. even with 50ms lag, you'll see no speedrunner playing online-- what'd one do if one's screen froze for anywhere from 2 to 50 seconds? And then disconnected? What if you don't have money to pay this month's net on time? I want to (fully) enjoy the game. I don't support 'games as services', I wouldn't expect frequent updates from unwilling devs (although I seriously doubt that other than the server-side PRNG, world generation and networking, much more has to be done), but a single version released at a reasonable price wouldn't detract much from the player base, given how it's grown exponentially. I've bought only 1 game in my life, that'd be d2, and I still play it, unlike every pirated game, that loses it's luster quickly or in due time- D2 hasn't. Most of the time I play Nullpomino, and/or minesweeper. So, me asking for a price implies reaching toward my wallet, because PoE deserves to be (more) playable. I'm going to have to quit, despite relishing it- mechanics, story, randomness, etc., all because the frustration is going to keep growing with 1) the number of enemies with mods (graphically taxing when you spawn 40 shiny, blinky, disco dudes- open strongbox and 4s of pause later everything's dead- what happened though?- I'm going to be the one dead at higher diffs), 2) the difficulty, hencefrom the loss of experience from each lagdeath, (and maybe, three, inability to respec easily as with D2's PlugY mod, that really unlocks and unfetters the game- convenience is not `cheating`, and even if it were- what do you care about others' experience of a supposedly single-player game?). How much would you pay for such an experience? |
