Why can't POE be played offline, like D2?
Hello guys, I guess this is my first post here.
I don't know if this topic has been brought up before (or how many times). It's something I was wondering today, so if anyone (maybe devs in general) could explain to me the 'hows' and 'whys' a game like POE or D3 aren't able to play offline, and make you dependent of your internet connection and 'servers that crash out of nowhere in an annoying frequency), I would be grateful!! And I think it's a interesting topic as well for discussion =) See you, exiles. (Sorry for any misspelling, English is my second language) Dernier bump le 11 mai 2019 à 03:51:11

Its mostly done to combat cheating.
They can keep a lot of important stuff server side instead of client side with the online only requirement. |

" Im pretty sure the devs stated this at some point. If you can link me otherwise ill remove it. |

Free to play online games done right bring lots of money, one time purchase doesn't.

They knew better. They looked at the state of Open Battle.net verse Closed and like it better when people couldn't modify their game to suit their whim. Most players did too.

For PoE, it's definitely a combination of
1. "we don't want people to be able to cheat their way to godly gear, even in single player because that'll make them bored of the game faster, and on top of that giving players access to a replica of the PoE server-side files makes it way more likely for them to figure out how to hack in online play even if the systems are kept separate" and 2. "we're a free to play game that thrives on stash tab sales and mtx, so giving people infinite stash tabs in offline ssf destroys our business model and letting people play offline at all will reduce mtx sales" For D3, it's a combination of the first one and "we're now owned by activision and therefore so fucking stupid that we don't believe that you should get a whole game that you can play on your own terms even if you fucking paid cash for it upfront" :) |

" Notably, stuff like item drop rates and 6-link chances could be reverse engineered. Lord knows GGG wouldn't want you to know just how far away the end of the rainbow is. |

Knowing the exact probability won't tell you how far away it is anyway; it'll just allow slightly more accurate statistics than the current community estimates (which are already pretty specific).

They won't do it because of potential cheating done at client site. Also, it is a business.
