How to best use varunastra?

Where are you all getting it for 1c? The cheapest I see it being sold for is 8c and it looks like some are selling it for over 1 ex.
yeah man, it's tanky but the dps is not impressive. Well the topic is not how to use varunastra when you do not have a good dagger but how to use it at it's full potential.

I know that this weapon is good, i never said the contrary. Varu is usefull.

Here is a CI assassin build with 210% Energy shield focused on physical damage

449% increased
49% attack speed
83% chaos
370% crit chance
213% crit mult

Should be around 7000 es, maybe a bit more with good rings
4 jewels slots

2 extra powa, so 6 with quest, assassin will give 3% base crit = 8%, and we will reach atleast 700% crit with the ascendancy nodes + power charges. Let's add the gem " increased critical strike" 20/20.

9.90 chance for the weapon and 808% increased. We reach 90% chance to crit. Very good!

will it work? yes... will bino be better? probably.
I will never be good but always I try to improve.

There are two nodes essential for Varunastra builds.

"By the Blade" near the Marauder area, and "Deadly Dilettante" near the Duelist area.

The best build should be either a Marauder or Duelist I think.
By the way, the naming of the unique suits its characteristics perfectly.

From Wikipedia:

"The Varunastra (Sanskrit वरुणास्त्र) is the water weapon (a storm) according to the Indian scriptures, incepted by Varuna. In stories it is said to assume any weapon's shape, just like water. As per the Indian legends or Puranas this weapon is said to have been obtained by great warrior characters such as Arjuna, Satyaki, Dhrishtadhuymna, Dronacharya, and many other illustrious warrior characters. The scriptures says this weapon was obtained by meditating on Varuna or Shiva, and was to be used with great care and skill. The usage of weapon was not possible for any inexperienced warrior, as a slight mistake committed, and the user himself could be destroyed."

Almost every ascendency unique is a garbage. Nothing fun to play with. With theorycrafting either.

Im theorycrafting from past three years and see nothing new that will beat old power creeps. Ascendency classes bring nothing more than more dps or more defences to already best builds from past half a year.

Uniques brought nothing. Through new blasphemy 22lv helm is nice for some old cursers/supports.

How do you feel about Iron Commander bow? Did you theorycraft that as well?
I started building around that. Planning to reach 800 dexterity. Thats 5 ballistas, without ancestral bond! I have high hopes. Should wreck bosses easily, although clearing is gonna be a bit clunky since it takes time to summon all those ballistas.

Quite. The name of the weapon literally means "weapon of Varuna".
Varuna is the Hindi mythology equivalent to zeus/poseidon combined in terms of what aspect of nature he represents.

For try, for see, and for know.

This is a buff
Maybe it's better convert damage to 100% elemental and go with Elemental Overload. Investing into crit is too wasteful with such weapon.
it depends of the nodes, but yes. thoo Rt is easily 20% more damage without accuracy

and there is the gem elemental focus too, it may be great with overload

Interesting points, everyone.

So it seems there are mainly two variants people expect to perform. The upper right side crit variant, and the lower left side RT variant.

I considered the crit variant, but as you can tell from my OP I ended up theorycrafting a RT variant.
The reason for that is, there are no hybrid nodes in the upper right part of the tree, and the only interesting thing you get from the claw nodes is the leech stuff. While the leech is interesting, I dont feel that it is all that powerful, and because of that, that part of the sword is pretty much unused. At this point I agree that you might as well switch to a dagger then. I see a 274 pdps dagger on poe.trade right now for 1.5ex, which is very similar to the price of a varunastra, maybe a bit more expensive.
(I got two varunastras at 272 and 274 dps for 35c and 39c, respectively, but that took some patient waiting)

Problem is, a dagger has higher base crit, so the nodes are more effective.

Ultimately, while I also immediately wanted to try the crit version, I am not sure it will beat a dagger.

As for the RT version, I think the damage might just be capped a bit early. It can absolutely take you into the low end of red maps, I am sure, but if you wanna go further, I think you simply need more damage.

I tried putting a sort of hybrid scion tree together, grabbing the deadly dilettante cluster, by the blade cluster, a number of crit clusters (there are a couple of good ones near by the blade and deadly dilettante), then going shadow to grab a bunch more crit. Then getting the assassin ascendancy for 1% crit + champion ascendancy for fortify.
In total that results in something in the ballpark of this, at lvl 87:
Spoiler

333% dmg
52% speed
7,9% base crit - 81,6% actual crit (with lvl 20 crit gem)
165% crit multi
123% life

Biggest issue is of course the life%, there are some more life clusters available, but then we are getting into the 90's, and still not getting to a great amount, so I dunno.

Personally I think a champion RT version is going to take the most advantage of the features varunastra has, but I am sure all mentioned versions can at the very least do atziri. Will probably need some actual results/attempts to say more at this point.

Edit: I like the 100% ele conversion idea, gonna look into that later

@Etherfire: i had a very similar reaction to deadpengs post lol, but i just ignore people like that, was happy to read your post though haha

Tried make 100% elemental and IceCrash + Cold To Fire + Avatar of Fire + Elemental Overload is best i could think for now:

Templar/Marauder/Duelist/Scion/Ranger Varunastra FireCrash
