Trendspotting: POE Playerbase almost halved on Steam alone since the release of Awakening

The most fun time people seem to have had with this game was 1.3. Things were overtuned in the favor of the players, but it was fun blowing crap up. People who played got used to that and those who played it a lot really liked the idea of moving as fast as possible because mobs weren't too challenging, the challenge is how fast you could plow through them.

This patch brought a change where things are slower, tougher, and more difficult to maintain. It's a design philosophy, the same one Blizz had when they released vanilla D3: lets turn up the difficulty and we'll assume the playerbase will figure things out. Well, a lot of players are going to instead figure out another game to play which isn't punishing or grindy. It's just how it is.
Steamcharts don't even tell half the story but this is still pretty shitty :/

Not really surprising.

"most" people play games to have fun and don't want a game that's too involved. (See D3's model).

People grind for money every day...most don't want to play a game where you have to do the same thing.

POE, first and foremost, has always been about preserving it's economy.

Lot of people just want shit to drop so they can use it for a while and try different builds. This is more of a niche game.

POE = Economy > Fun.

Always has been always will be.

I'd love to see a D3 player concurrency chart from the beginning of a season and then one month later. I'd bet my left kidney it looks pretty much exactly like PoE's.

So will that kidney be shipped in a cooler or a lunchbox?

Old by this point but this was pre RoS

Spoiler

E: The population isn't a peak and valley type deal like PoE's. The way they have it set-up most people go back to their non-seasonals after they've acquired all the seasonal perks/goodies.

That infograph doesn't show player concurrency at all. We can only extrapolate from highest number to average number (and indeed, there is a decline if we look at these two numbers). And as you said the numbers are old.

Proofs?
GGG banning all political discussion shortly after getting acquired by China is a weird coincidence.

Proofs?

I admit there is no proof. Blizzard don't release their numbers, just like GGG don't. My hypothesis is as baseless as yours. Its just a gut feeling.

E: All we can do is guestimate based on the few numbers they do release once in awhile. I may seem like i'm team D3 but that just isn't the case. To be clear I prefer PoE but I do love Diablo.

I love Diablo too (and two..). Just not its red-headed stepchild called Diablo 3 :D

That's fine, you like what you like. No need to justify it.

I would think if anything, D3 suffers from even worse peaks and valleys than PoE. Even playing completely solo and semi-casually, you can start from scratch and take a character to max level and fully decked out in their endgame gear set within a week or two. From there, about the only thing left to do is grind out paragon levels and slight numerical upgrades to the same items you already have. Or make another character and do it all over again. Sure there are SOME people that like endlessly grinding in hopes of getting that last +4 str they need to perfect their character, but most will have quit long before that point. And even making a new character is far less interesting since you only need to level 1 of each class and can fully respec any time you want.

Ya for some that could be the appeal, sure. In PoE I enjoy 1-80 much more than the "endgame" map grind that follows. In D3 its the opposite, I'm bored to tears until I hit the soft lvl cap and start grinding out para lvls and gathering bounties, grifts etc.

They both do dif things really well. I don't think D3 could do races for shit for example, PoE's structure just lends itself perfectly to that. Leagues are better than Seasons imo. As someone already mentioned I love that the Leagues have new gameplay elements, the Seasons sadly don't. Another thing PoE does better. You just cant be the best at everything. I like em' both what can I say
