Why did you or your friend quit playing POE?

I quit every 4/5 month ,then come back for an other 4/5 month

I just build my char farm some currency , start map endgame and atziri and then i need like 300ex to upgrade a single item some mirrors and i can't farm 150EX like that so i stop and after 4 month back and do the same thing

And my 3 friend i hooked on poe quitted pretty fast

2 of them just played 2 days died on every mobs and uninstalled the game

the last tried to play build something solid farm some currency but like the other died a lot and uninstalled too

...it was quotes. from the forum. lolz!
I have been playing on and off since January 2013, the very day the game went into open beta, I joined.

Now I have never considered myself a good ARPG player, I use to play FPS competitively. ARPG turns me off because of the constant need for trading and improvement of items.

I was invited to play PoE by a few friends who thought this is the true reincarnation Diablo II (which I did not play). My friends are hardcore ARPG players, some still play D2 and D3 as well as Guild Wars, etc. In PoE, they wanted someone reliable to be in parties initially - due to party bonus of exp and loot (Also keep in mind that we had no PA back then, so looters could always items from monsters killed by ranged toons). With a party of five friends, sometimes we never bothered picking items up quickly. We focused on staying alive and then go back and slowly loot everything.

At the moment, ALL OF THEM QUIT POE OR TAKEN LONG HIATUS FROM IT. Almost ironically, I am the only person who still puts in 1-2 hours casually into the game. Sometimes, I take a month or two break from PoE, my longest break lasted 4 months.

Without writing a novel here, I'll summarize some of their gripes with the game and what pushed them away.

In short, my friends and I felt PoE is unrewarding.

-LEGACY ITEMS: nerf should be across the board or don't create them in the first place. Why can't some unique items drop anymore in permanent leagues? Not everyone wants to play temp leagues.

If it is meant to reward veterans of PoE for staying with the game since the beginning of time, then a whole other set of items that are purely aesthetic should be made. Nerfs to future versions of existing items creates two tiers of the same builds, limiting the options of some unique builds that depend on some legacy versions of unique items. That is, it hampers the efforts of players to build unique and and interesting characters.

Instead, have VANITY ITEMS! E.g. Pets for those who joined since closed beta, open beta, and Aztiri etc. Cool footprints, armor skins, skill effects, honorary titles below character's names, and character animations.

-REPETITION of Act I-III in the different difficulties.

-Random luck-based crafting system (though arguably better now with the Masters and Lvl 8 Work Benches).

-END GAME MAPS SYSTEM - unrewarding and punishing for those who can't maintain level 75-78 map pool. It's frustrating when lv 85 players can't maintain 20%/hr exp gain because they ran out of 76/77/78 maps.

-Skewed loot pool: even if you stack some MF, most of the time you get lower level unique items such discourages players (unique items are already hard to get with no MF), especially in well-rolled lv 76, 77, 78 maps. For my over two years of playing PoE, there are some mid-tiered uniques that I saw drop!

-Difficulty in obtaining currency from monsters (particularly exalts, divines, regals, blessed, fuses). This goes back to rewarding players for their time spent farming and grinding. In games with currency (i.e. gold, florin, cash), farming simply means two source of incomes: the raw currency gain from couple hundred gold dropped by monsters AND rare items we find which we may sell. I prefer the latter to PoE's currency only. Some will quit, others will RMT/bot.

-Lack of events from Devs: e.g. Double EXP hours, double drop events, Dev hunting events that are so common in other ARPGs from Asia and America.Players return during major patches, then leave again when no updates from coming.

-Character WIPES and Skill Tree nerfs. This one should be obvious to most RPG players.

-Skill nerfs - this breaks builds which players spend so much time leveling and gearing. It is disheartening for many. E.g. spark nerf, shock stack nerf, minion nerf etc. Why not allow old builds to survive. I bet players who are bored of their spark totems will try out new CoC builds! It maintains a healthy variety in game!

-TRADES: When new players have difficulty obtaining items that are worthwhile or worth something and when they cannot reliably get currency from farming, it is frustrating to see those crazy prices in standard. I am fortunate enough that when I started PoE, I had friends who pooled together rares and eventually could create MF toons to start generating wealth. Selling a few legacies also ensured that we had enough currency to sustain our toons.

======================

I hope ACTIV will solve some of the issues that many players in this thread has brilliantly pointed out.

You don't quit PoE.
You make a break.
If you're going through hell, keep going. Timezone GMT +2:00
Bad drop rates, potentially the best crafting system ever squandered by too much RNG, artificial difficulty in the form of enemy spike damage, more bad drop rates, not enough incentive for solo grinding, and spending currency to roll maps which almost never paid off. Desynch was also a pretty big annoyance, but it's on the list behind this other stuff.

Harvest sucks! But look at my decked out gear two weeks in!

Labyrinth salt farm miner.

"But my build diversity" , "Game is too hard!" - Meta drone playing the same 1-3 builds for years.
The legacy items in the 1.3 patch notes got me to quit... I was thinking of 'trying' out 1.4 but then they made eternal orbs a legacy item without disabling them, and I said fuck this shit.... I'm out.
