Any way to run from a thumb drive?

PoE installs files into My Doc/My Games, as well as creating registry keys. If you're trying to play without leaving a trace, you might be out of luck.

Yeah, that's the second location I mentioned... just use symlinks. No one will care about empty folders, no matter what they're named.

Note: The game will probably run like DOGSHIT from a thumbdrive. The devices and ports better be usb v3.0 capable.

How do you format to NTFS? I don't seem to have that option on mine, just FAT32 and exFat

Edit: Used this software http://download.cnet.com/HP-USB-Disk-Storage-Format-Tool/3000-2094_4-10974082.html?

open windows explorer by right clicking on start and clicking Explore (in windows xp) or by right clicking start and clicking "open windows explorer" in vista/7. alternativly you may open "my computer" (this is essentially windows explorer)

now plug in your drive, you'll see it show up in the left hand pane shortly (may take a few moments if it has to install drivers)

now right click on the drive in the left hand pane, and click format..

alternativly, you could just click start then run (in windows xp) and type "diskmgmt.msc" without the quotes to start the disk manager. if you're on vista/7 click start and start typing "diskmgmt.msc".

once the disk manager has opened, find your drive and right click on it, and format.

when you format, dont worry about the allocation size, and do a quick format.

some versions (home, starter, etc..) may not include the diskmgmt.msc snapin, im not sure. so if you cant use that, then the first option is there for you.

*disclaimer* i, nor anyone on this forum, will take responsibility if you accidently format the wrong drive. i think windows is smart enough to not let you formate the drive its on, but if you have other drives attached be sure you're formatting the correct drive before you commit to a format. this ERASES all data on the drive.

Hm. Balls. I could chance it and see if IT really cares...

And what is symlinks?

symlinks are unix version of windows shortcuts..

basically, he/she said "make shortcuts from the current folder to your thumbdrive"

Windows can do actual symlinks, too. To folders.

I use symlinks all the time for games, to move installations to and from my ssd drives.

Awesome, thanks guys. I'll try this out. I need to make sure nothing gets copied over to My Documents since that folder gets backed up to the company servers. If I just delete anything that gets thrown in there after every session I should be ok.

Interesting problem, assuming that My Documents is redirected to a network location...

I'll think about it.

UPDATE1: I think symlinking it to a location on the usb drive (or wherever) will bypass the network share while the symlink exists. You'll want to see what the current target location of the folder is before messing with it, so you can put it back after done playing. You can set up batch files to automate this process.

UPDATE2: You may find that your entire user profile is actually stored on a server. In that case, I wouldn't risk playing games on that computer at all, unless you could make a local user profile. ;)

It sounds like I'm screwed until either they make some serious changes to how the game is stored and run, or until I get a new personal computer. Ugh. Oh well, enjoy the $10 guys, you deserve it for sure. I'll play this eventually...
This is why the registry is a terrible idea. Developers should not store information there that is required to run the game. In fact, developers should not use the registry at all.

All games should be portable and entirely modular. Games should always give you the option of where to install, dragging and dropping from one location to another should be viable, and last but not least, games should NEVER install or create folders outside the destination location.

The fact that POE does some of these things literally makes me sick, and I feel it's something they should change.
