Shouldn't you technically be immune to the element you're using?

The answer to the title is simply no, and do all of OPs other questions is just simply yes.

So, if a warrior has a 2H mace they are immune to damage from 2H maces?

If you pick up a flamethrower in real life and start torching stuff, you're still fully capable of being burned by the flamethrower you're not immune to it?

Everyone in films throw punches why aren't they immune to physical damage?
