PoE 2 Is Bleeding Players, The 0.2.1 Update Was the Turning Point

PoE has 6,363 players online right now. That’s not a stat, it’s a warning.

The decline started in 0.1, but 0.2.1? That was the moment it really went downhill. Just check the patch notes, I don’t even have to name it. You already know what changed.

And if the reply is “That’s not the reason,” fine, then why are so many players gone? Even the dedicated players who used to grind every league are quietly walking away.

I don’t know who pushed for 0.2.1’s direction, but it clearly wasn’t a win. Feels like GGG can’t (or won’t) reverse it now. Shame, this was supposed to be PoE 2’s rise, not its fall.
Used to think PoE 2 was “not just PoE 1 with better graphics.”
But that illusion shattered after the 0.2.1 patch.
It ruined the feel, the loot, the flow, everything.
Make it good again, GGG.

There is already a thread on this, I don't think we need a new post started again to discuss the same thing. The remaining people left here know the game is not in a good position and bleeding player count.

Most of my friends are waiting on the sideline to start with launch of 0.3 league.
I'm still playing every single day in ssf and having a ton of fun. Touch some grass and stop dooming, the game's in EA and already better than anything on the market.

+1 having lots of fun daily here

Kinda curious on what "you dont have to name here" regarding 0.2.1?
Was a great patch imo.
Sounds to me like one of those guys who've been complaining about the evils of 0.2.1 making some items easier to find and thus causing a price drop that was kinda bad on accounts that were holding those items.
Yeah, as far as I see it 0.2.1 wasn't a turning point, it was more of a last straw. Personally I stopped playing the league after it, not because it ruined something, but rather because it fixed nothing.
0.2.0 and everything that followed was the worst patching i've seen in my life. The game is great though and i think 0.3.0 will be like heaven and earth compared to 0.2.0. Partialy because devs really do know it was a failure and partially because they kinda failed because of different circumstances at that time.
Not sure what even changed. I logged in on my Titan that I made a long time ago. Had to reallocate passive points - sure no biggie, although I recall there being more jewel sockets on the tree, but I might be mistaken. Anyway, I went into t1 map and it felt like my character has 10 stacks of Sap at all times. I was basically chasing white mobs that were running away like an idiot. Alt+F4 followed.

I tried again a few days later. I thought I'll give ranged gameplay a try, so I started with mercenary. After leveling up I looked at the skil tree and got completely disinterested. All good things are either conditional or have severe downsides attached to them. For now I gave up on playing PoE 2 completely.

Kinda sad about it, because the game looks great and I love the gems system. Somehow I'm unable to get into it though while in PoE 1 I got 40/40 challenges and kept playing afterwards. I feel like the biggest offender might be the gameplay speed. It's the same reason I can't enjoy Grim Dawn that much - this game feels like the game engine glitched and plays at 0.5x speed.

This is a really good take. I can relate and agree with this. In a lot of situations the gameplay feels more frustrating than fun, especially when you combine how slow warriors are with heavy armor movement speed penalties as well as map design that seems deliberately designed to slow players down.
I don't think they care about the number of players in PoE2 as much as they care about the overall number of players for both games.

If you factor in the number of people still playing PoE1 (45k daily based on steamchart), I think they are fairly happy with the results. Those numbers are nowhere near the retention number from 0.1.0, but still, they're a huge improvement compared to the number of players they had 1 year ago at the same time.
