Yeah, you still have 6 portals - just don’t die and make sure your hands grow from the right place.
Of course, there are some issues, like unclear visuals, etc.
Maybe a good compromise would be 'decayed' exp - impose the penalty, but give the player the opportunity to earn it back by beating the map. The problem with that is that the game is designed to have enemies respawn if you die. That could lead to people deliberately dying in maps they like just before completion so they can farm them - so you'd need to save the state of the map at the time the player died. That might not be something relatively straightforward to implement even if the devs wanted to at this point.

If the above became the case, then content that is too tricky or the player too undergeared, no amount of attempts will matter, and there's your time sink. If it isn't, the player can earn back what they've lost by improving.

It is not complicated to implement, because it already was that way in Path of Exile 1. This respawn mobs when player dies is one more PoE 2 BS.

GGG scraped what worked on their previous title to make something "new"

Ok, is EA, time to experiment... but, would be nice experiment cool things, new things... not the Ruthless BS nobody liked.
They need to add this feature in poe1, it will make the game 300 times better.

Making a game for your non core audience is the worst thing you can ever do as a developer. All of you newbies will ultimately leave the game while the same poe1 players continue playing poe2. GGG knows this and ultimately the endgame will become more and more like poe1 as this game bleeds the newbies and the actual ARPG lovers stick around.

Yep, still wont come back to poe2 till that 1 portal thing is gone. I wanna chill while farming.
Love poe1 with way over 10k hours played and a lot of money spent. Stand now no money from me for poe2.
If I wanted 1 portal system, I would play HC without loging out.

The core audience for POE2 are people who played POE1, a game with 6 portals. The only audience that GGG is picking up with 1-shots, 10% experience loss, 1 portals, terrible crafting, are forum trolls.

I personally refuse to believe that the core audience of POE1 was forum trolls, but you tell me...
