That my friends is a Krampus, and in typical German/Austrian fashion, is meant to look fucking frightening.

On the 6th of December (Saint Nicholas Day), Saint Nicholas would walk around the towns and give kids oranges and pecans and protect you from the Krampus. Meanwhile, the Krampus (pictured above) would walk around and try to punish kids with whips and flails.

I remember as a kid we'd have 18-20 year olds dressing as skinhead Krampuses, who'd chase after kids (10 year old me) with big steel chains and scare the shit out of them.
