Playing Path of Exile with OCD

Tell your doctor your meds aren't working.
This is probably the worst game to play if you have OCD....so much stuff....and it's still in beta.
Most games that are gold have enough problems, let alone a beta from an indie dev team.

Here's an excerpt from an article about gaming with OCD:

"Fortunately there are ways to cope with OCD which can help victims further enjoy their gaming and -- more importantly -- their life as a whole. PubMed Health, an online resource from the U.S. National Library of Medicine, notes this reassuring point about treatment: "Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has been shown to be the most effective type of psychotherapy for this disorder. The patient is exposed many times to a situation that triggers the obsessive thoughts, and learns gradually to tolerate the anxiety and resist the urge to perform the compulsion.""

Thank you for your support, I'll listen to your advice, that's a great article from IGN.
I delete and make new characters all the time. I also have OCD and i obsess with perfection and my organization of loot and builds.

however i dont know what you want GGG to do about it. I am this way with all video games. From FPS to RPG. It really doesnt matter. Its not a bad thing to want a perfect character. Its what everyone is striving for. You will find something that works for you sooner or later. Or you wont and will have to quit the game. I know ive quit games before because i kept restarting over and over again until i figured i would never get what i was looking for.

Good luck.

OCD is the most selfish thing I have ever heard people complain about.

Ever hear about someone being obessively compulsive about someone other than themselves?

Actually its not asshole. Its kind of serious and can really screw with your mind. Its people like you that are selfish. And OCD doesnt only relate to ones specific needs. It can cause obsession to anyone or anything. Until you have your PhD in physiology specified in Obsessive Compulsive Disorders dont come on here making fun of a serious disability.

I have a lesser form of OCD but I get where you are coming from. I remake my characters all the time, the good news is that I can keep all the items in the stash for the next time I run my char through normal and decide I didn't like his passive setup (lol, I find it funny, but I know it is much more serious for others). About the uninstall re install thing, realize that it isn't the game installation that causes this. There is nothing wrong with the game being installed, so re-installing it will not "fix" or "perfect" the problem. I hope that helps you fight that one, because that one really sucks.

Realize that you are not competing against anyone, so remaking characters isn't too bad, go ahead and stash old items for the next character you are perfecting OR take the recommendation of putting on a micro transaction to help prevent the desire to delete your character. I would go for the latter if you are having severe OCD issues, as it helps you make the conscious decision to NOT delete your character.

I wish you well in figuring out how to handle this personally, it takes a lot to fight OCD sometimes, and the more you notice it, the worse it becomes. It is annoying like that. Just realize that it IS mind over matter. While some drop that and expect you to just fix it, I know that saying it is not the same as doing it. IT is a long hard road, but like any other road it is taken by single steps.

Take your time, take a step back, and do the best you can. Personally I try and find a small thing to reclaim a step at a time. I set a small goal I MUST reach before I let my OCD take over. Something as small as clearing act 1, eventually turns into clearing act 2. Sometimes I forget about my OCD and just keep running until it doesn't bother me, THIS time.

I am no professional, but I deal with OCD too. If you ever want to talk about it, or ask for tips on how I deal, feel free to shoot me a pm or something. I try and be friendly to people that are open and nice (and don't ask me questions that are easy to search on their own. I HATE it when people ask me a basic question -on a forum- where that is answered in the commonly asked questions stickied at the top of the page :P) seriously though, if you have tried to search something, or just want to ask a personal question, just ask.

Good luck, sorry about the text wall
I guess I will have to buy a one way ticket to hell with your lives
I would've posted here earlier but I had an unorganized gem stash tab gnawing at me. I also had some staffs on the same tab as some swords so it took some organizing to correct that catastrophe. :P

Don't think of it as OCD... think of it as free content.
If you find yourself disagreeing with something I've said then you can take solace in the fact that you are no longer alone in the world.

Thank you so much for your amazing support and understanding, guys!
It saddens me to know that so many people cope with OCD, I thought it was a rare disorder...
I'll listen to all your advices and fight OCD like you do!
And I know it was silly of me to ask GGG to do something about it.

Thx again, I feel a little better and comforted. :)

I had a little read through this thread and it's good to see you're feeling a bit more positive OP.

I too have OCD and it has negatively impacted my gaming, in a big way - for years now. I'm a do everything - rinse, repeat - gotta be perfect kinda guy which creates all sorts of issues when gaming BUT I find if any particular game causes me to flip out too bad I'll either not play it OR take a break from it for a while.

Also, a tip: If you ever feel like large and complex games are getting the best of your OCD, try play something simple like a platformer (I like Crash Bandicoot, it's very 100%-able) or a racing game (I like getting golds for everything) and do your best to relax and remember why you enjoy gaming.

Best of luck.
