Molten Strike + Iron Grip...does it work?

Okay you people deserve a better explanation. I think I remember the explanation GGG gave us before.

Basically I have been running lightning strike for a year on a pathetic one handed marauder which I sought all manners to improve it. I checked up the forum section on gem skill discussion on lightning strike and flipped through the first 20 pages. There, I finally found one of the official statement from a moderator that iron grip indeed does not boast projectiles unless it is ranged damage. As far as concerned, lightning strike only works with meelee weapon anyway. It was only then I finally understood why my iron grip gem never seemed to make my projectiles hit harder.

Now there is this molten strike, which I tried with iron grip again and nothing seems to hit harder. However I am not sure if this molten strike can be used with a ranged weapon.

i suggest you read my last post again and maybe also follow that link where mark explicitly states, that both iron grip and point blank work with lightning strike.

Nvm I found it. Interesting it came from Mark GGG as well

it seems to me mark is only talking about the melee hit not being affected by point blank and iron grip in that link.

The quote that says Iron Grip doesn't work was from April 2012, before the passive was changed from specifying Ranged Attacks to Projectile Attacks instead. The quote that says it does work was from December 2012, which is after the change. Here is another post later in the Lightning Strike feedback thread where Mark confirms that Iron Grip works with it.

Hmm,, so, if the melee damage takes the strength bonus, and then the projectiles are based off that and can get it again with iron grip, does that mean that a single 4 str node equals 4% more damage?
Or is even multiplicative?
No. Even if the projectiles dealt both melee and projectile damage, there's still only one bonus, you can't get it twice.
The projectiles deal projectile damage - this is not melee damage and does not benefit from the increased melee damage bonus from strength.
Iron Grip changes the strength bonus to apply to projectile damage as well as melee - this is expanding the list of things that bonus applies to, not making a separate bonus that could stack. With Iron Grip, the bonus from strength will apply to the projectiles.
I will also throw in my 2 cents to confirm this works.

I cannot see the actual damage #s but I have tested it while shift/clicking Molten strike just to hit in the air and let only the molten strike projectiles hit a mob...

I can tell you for sure that when I put that point in Iron Grip, it was like day and night. 2-3 Molten projectiles and that did it with the Iron Grip...versus 7-8 without.

Again though, like I said at the beginning of this thread, it would be really nice to see projectile damage in the description on both Lightning Strike and Molten Strike skills.

and hell, when is the "Ice Strike" coming out? ;)

Yes. It Works. DO NOT listen to the guy in this thread telling you it doesn't work.

Trust me. It works.
I currently have this skill yet i cannot confirm if it works, so does this really work or did i just wasted another skill point? can any GM or admin please confirm this? so far i dont see the difference of having that skill
Why do you need another confirmation? Three posts above yours is the developer-quote, that should be official enough.

Iron Grip benefits the projectile part of Molten Strike, but you won't see a damage change in the tooltip, since the tooltip displays the damage of the melee hit.

No wasted skill point. ;)

oic, sorry coz i have the skill and the change is not felt, btw does it work on lightning strike too?
Yea, it's the same for Lightning Strike.

Both skills have a melee part, and a projectile part. The former does get a damage bonus from strength by default, the latter gets the damage bonus from strength when taking Iron Grip.
Yes, Molten Strike and Lightning Stike both benefit from Iron Grip. So does Spectral Throw. It's in the wiki, it's been stated by GGG, and simple in-game testing can verify it.

Chances are you want to take the keystone if you're using LS or MS, as well as if you're using ST as a duelist/mara/templar; it's one of the most efficient nodes you can take if you've got any decent amount of strength (for my ~350str character right now it's effectively giving my Spectral Throw a '70% increased projectile attack damage' mod... compare that to ANY notable node on the tree, nothing comes close)

The actual moral of the story is to never put complete faith in tooltip DPS.
When Stephen Colbert was killed by HYDRA's Project Insight in 2014, the comedy world lost a hero. Since his life model decoy isn't up to the task, please do not mistake my performance as political discussion. I'm just doing what Steve would have wanted.
