No worries, Catcha. I recently had a hankering for DLance (despite having moved on from fantasy for the most part, I first read Chronicles/Legends when I was 12, so it's burned in there somehow) so re-read the Chronicles, fondly dug up my Art of Dragonlance for a browse, and am now going through newly-acquired Annotated Legends. After that, Second Generation, then Summer Flame, then (new territory for me) the War of Souls and the Lost Chronicles.

So I was more than glad to explore the idea of the Staff of Magius as a magical focus rather than a martial weapon. I think your example is fundamentally sound: a mage uses their staff as a weapon *only* if they've exhausted other options.

Gandalf's an exception to me since he's outside the usual mage-fighter dichotomy -- he's as apt to use Glamdring to smite some orcs as he is to...well, to be honest, he actually almost never uses magic destructively. Still, his staff is likely much more magical than it is martial.

Changing the block to spell block would be brilliant.

My love for the dragonlance series knows no bounds. I'm still waiting for a mage as powerful and awesome as Raistlin. From that series, I believe lord Huma made it mandatory for mages to also carry a dagger for self protection as his friend Magius died because he had no weapon to protect him after his staff was stolen...

That would have been an incredible unique in PoE. A dagger that is only useable with a staff.
GGG listens to its fans!!! Thank you!
You guys realize staves have the potential to roll absolutely batshit-crazy caster mods right? But between the hybrid mod pool and general underpowered-ness of basic casting classes, people don't really try to craft them.

For example, it's possible to craft a staff with:

+1 all gem levels/+2 (specific elemental) levels
160% spell damage
22% cast speed
109% spell crit
38% global crit multi

Something like this being 6Ld would absolutely trump any wand/shield combo in terms of raw damage. A cold variant of this would put Taryns to shame (though not so much with fire/searing due to the burn damage).

Hybrid weapons like staves, daggers, wands, and scepters fill a niche in that they have the highest overall damage potential in their weapon class, but are just a huge pain in the ass to roll properly.

It's only really obvious with daggers and wands because daggers have just about the best damage nodes in the entire skill tree, and wands are the only one-handed ranged weapon option. They're obvious choices while staves and scepters seem to fade into the background despite having a ton of potential.

I believe there are a few decent global crit nodes for staff in the upper witch area. More than wands have.
I played poe when it was in beta but i was a noob.Had no friends playing and i quitted after a few weeks.
Started again with some friends on release day and now i know the shadow class enough to play it in hc leagues(next season i`ll try bow ranger)
The op is right...when it comes to spells, the game is very confusing.I sold tons if high phys staffs at the npc thinking "well...this is supposed to have spell dmg/mana regen and shit"
Also i think spell dmg should increase elemental dmg.If you are using a fire spell, why doesn't the spell dmg increase it's dmg?ITS A SPELL!(forgive me if im wrong, still new to other things besides phys dmg)

It does.

Though only for spells, obviously. Not attacks.
