PoE population?

Just wondering roughly what is PoE population? I thought it was something around 40k~ but I saw the leaked review talking about 5 million registered players.

Last fall, I met with the guys from Grinding Gears games shortly before they launched their hit online action RPG, Path of Exile. Four months and five million registered players later,..
Maybe I was too much out of touch with game population, so does anyone have any idea what the playing population is? |

Registered players =! active players, i would guess around 40k average with huge fluctuations when new content is released.

The only real indicator are the Steam stats, but those are only for the Steam client. Since we don't know what percentage of the player base uses Steam (as opposed to the standalone client), those numbers by themselves are not very useful. (But not entirely useless, either.)

Concurrent players is a fickle thing. EVE cycles between 20k and 60k and it has 400~k active users. EVE is the only game I know of to post stats reguarly.

"6k players on steam was the peak today and if I had to guess steam players are a small % of the total players since there is no reason to use steam drm with this free game and it had tons of players before it was out on steam. Regardless the numbers will explode on the next patch. |
