Steamchart - doesnt look too healthy?! :/

It was only a matter of time this thread was hidden away in the feedback forum.

Chris and co. are aware of the issues, else they wouldn't be nerfing RHOAS of all things in normal mode. They are well aware that the biggest dropoff in Steam numbers happened with people who didn't even stick around to see Brutus. Heck, they didn't even reach the steep and unforgiving "I quit this shit" curve of act 2/3 Cruel.

Anyway, the numbers for Steam are definitely worrying, because we just hit bottom tier on par with the end of last league, when no one wanted to play and was just waiting for the new league. And we still got over two months to go. Definitely not good, since it means that the players leaving are not the casuals but the regulars.

I think we need to concentrate on changing the current grindy/no-life mechanics instead of just adding new stuff. You need to retain players' interest and reward them in some way. I'll take increased drops with a bit of inflation over the status quo any day of the week.

You forget that most people don't like to mindnumbingly grind for 16 weeks straight :P They come and go, which doesn't really matter much. This isn't a subscription based MMO after all.
GGG banning all political discussion shortly after getting acquired by China is a weird coincidence.

That's right, it's not.
It's a pyramid economy shopping game, it matters a fuck ton that people come and go. People come, people go. They go either because they were successful and got bored, were unsuccessful and got frustrated or because shopping =/= aRPG to them. There isn't an infinite number to replace them, a pyramid wont exist as only a top.

The changes GGG are making to better retention are futile, it's the model itself which will always fail at retention. To make matters worse, the players that don't give a flying fuck about economy, who could never quit through 'too much too soon' nor because unsuccessful bottom feeder, the self-found, the longevity players, leave also because stupid trade gated content and crafting.

2 play styles we can split to 3 player types.
The model succeeds at retaining none of them and it ain't because Hailrake, tutorials, checkpoints and rhoas.
Casually casual.

Do you have some pyramid fetish bro? :P We already had this discussion so I won't repeat myself.

Since I'm on a roll,

The game is balanced around botting and RMT.

I agree with that and please note that you can't bot in steam.

Did people expect anything different from a game riddled by desync since the beginning?

Did people think the popularity would actually increase over time after they couldn't use the beta crutch excuse anymore?

Come on now...

Sane people don't enjoy playing/buying/owning broken shit. Probably only people with a "vested interest" in the game do, or at least force themselves to think they do. You guys know who you are...

GGG Logic: Game's fundamentally broken, let's ignore it and see how this plays out, maybe it'll gain popularity. It could happen... Right???

During launch, we know that Steam's average number of concurrent players = 35k

We also know that the split between non-steam and steam users were half and half. Which means that during launch, the average number of concurrent players was 70k combined.

We know that steam now has around 6k concurrent players on average. Based on Chris' comments, we know the ratio of non-steam to steam player is 3:7. We can then deduce that the average number of non-steam players is 14k.

Therefore, the current average concurrent number of players is around 20k or so.

Since launch, steam's average number of users has dropped from 35k to 6k. Non steam's average number of users has dropped from 35k to 14k. Total average number of users is down from 70k to 20k.

And now launch act3 merc. Open trade.. khem.. party board. Filter out the trades and check. Last two character i brought to merciles i had to do warehouses/marketplace because there were NO DOCK GROUPS OPEN. I tried several times and there were simply no groups to get a waypoint..

20k players is very optimistic.. and how many of these are traders?

we will have a slight stop of this trend during May 1st-4th 'holidays' when in large parts of the world people/students have time off.

i managed to buy Doon Ch. mace for 5 chaos and it seems it had been listed on poexyz with that price for several days.. cmon this is 3exalts below 'regular' price. in the good days such deals lasted 10 minutes.

Those are 'barbecue holidays', it ain't no christmas to laze around playing a game :)

But yes, I noticed a rather severe drop in trade activity, last time I wanted to buy something it took me a week to get a 15+ quality cyclone. The lack of buyers is probably even more notable.
Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

It would be interesting to see Twitch statistics for PoE. I know, that PoE was never so popular between Twitch viewers and it's not prime time anyway, but it's kinda depressing to see, that Mario Party and Pokemon X had more viewers each than PoE few minutes ago... but at least beats Super Mario, Sims3 and Sonic 2 ;)
Anticipation slowly dissipates...
