ES Leech language needs to change

Es Leech is not new. It has always existed since Ghost Reaver, It's been in the game for like 5+ years

ES Leech did not change this patch. It works exactly the same way as it did with Ghost Reaver, only from hits.

If you read the entry about leech in the wiki it notes that there are no differences between life leech and energy shield leech except one leeches life and the other ES.

From the wiki:

“Mechanics

All leech mechanics act the same way for life, mana, or in the case of Ghost Reaver, energy shield. Examples in this article will use life, but if the character has equal statistics for a different resource (mana or energy shield), they will apply in the same way.”

I think the issue here is not the mechanics, the issue is the inconsistent language.

For instance "increased damage" and "chaos damage" does apply to DoT damage, but spell damage leeched doesn't apply to DoT? This isn't an issue with Attacks, because "ailment" and "hit" is clearly seperated mechanically and language wise.

I think the wording in general could use some refurbishing on every mechanic, so that if you have the general gist of the language, mechanics are more obvious.
It's just inefficient to say "leech on hit" every single time instead of just "leech".
"Leech" refers to the "Leech Mechanics" which state only Hits can Leech. Using "Leech on Hit" would be redundant as "Leech" on its own already includes "Hit".

I wont disagree that anything mentioning life leech should include ‘on hits’. Its on the gems. Should be on the passive tree too.

They don't have to. They can add a second paragraph like they do on nodes with onslaught and the like, that leech only works with direct damage.

Or better yet, they can simply turn the DoT portion of the chaos spells into an ailment, remove the useless part of the nodes with "non ailment damage over time" from the chaos nodes, then all further distinction is superfluous. Attacks and Spells can leech, ailments cant.
"

Leech recovers an amount of life, mana or energy shield over time, relative to the damage inflicted on an enemy. Leech cares about the damage taken by the enemy, not the amount of life removed.[1][2]

"

Whenever a character hits an enemy while having an applicable source of leech, a leech instance is created on that character.

Damage over time (often refered to as DoT) is a damage inflicted continuously over a period of time. Unlike the other three damage sources, damage over time does not hit.[1]

Now that hits and damage over time is understood, you can surmize that burning, ignite, poison, essence drain, etc. Will not leech based on the damage it does, but rather the initial damage/hit that created the instance of damage over time, and instance of leech.

But the true question is...

Why is my whole post in quotes if there is no end quote modifier at the end of this word?

Having read the replies, I think some of you put into words something I've been having trouble with since I started playing, maybe 8 months ago. It's ailment vs. damage.

Bleeding and poison are dots, and they are ailments, being something that is procced on hit that requires a % chance. Cold and chaos dots are not. They are inherent in the spell and are subject to different rules, and, as stated previously, added spell damage affects both the initial hit, if there is one, and the dot. Also, ES leech is not the same as life leech regarding it's effectiveness as it has a lower maximum cap. It is these different rules that made me think there might have been a different mechanic behind ES leech, since it does say "spell damage" (yeah, ok not magic). I come into patches not assuming anything.

Thanks.

This whole dilemma would be resolved if only there was a key stone like this:

"Your damage over time effects now benefit from leeching".

Things like scorching ray and RF dont leech either.

If I could leech from those two skills I would become the new god of wraeclast. ^^
