Every time I've seen someone confused about SST (or about most skills in general) is because:

* They did not read the skill/gem/passive description properly. (A vast majority of cases.)
* They do not understand the meaning of mechanical keywords such as "attack" or "projectile". (Which is not specific to SST.)
* There is a bug in the game which makes something that should work not work. (Unfortunately the case currently with SST and some attack speed nodes.)

SST is not any more complex than most other skills in the game. It's just new and so the specific cases are not yet firmly set into the general knowledge.
