A drawback that really only matters in Labyrinths is not a big enough drawback. I've completed Uber labs without much trouble on VP characters. As long as you aren't WBing through sawblades, then you should be fine. Even then, by the time you get low on HP you've encountered another pack.

But when the poster specifies a life build, and you counter with energy shield continuing to regen for VP/GR builds (it does, by the way), that seems to be missing the point.

I wasn't speaking in regards to the lab, I was saying in general not having the downside of VP is an issue.

Imo:
Melee needs to facetank. Simple as that. Basic game design. Any Dot, any basic attacks, everything. That's how melee works inherently.
To force melee to not facetank all the time, we have telegraphed attacks that players are supposed to dodge manually from time to time (Minotaur Burrow, Hydra Fork/Doom arrow, Chimera circle, Shaper slam, Atziri double FB, you get the idea).
Make those telegraphed attacks deal 3 times as much damage, so they one shot EVERYTHING, everytime, but slow down their wind up a bit (some of them don't give you enough reaction time, most of them are fine, but some are just bullshit).




3.0 changes aren't final. I was speaking as of current stable release. Also, one-shots are the reason why I don't play hardcore very much. I'd rather not have that be a thing I'd have to worry about even more.
Ggg can't balance at all, so it doesn't matter what we want. All this thread will do is make us regret making a character in the first place.

Anyways. On the original topic.

Vaal Pact doesn't need a bigger drawback. It needs a weaker main effect. No drawback is ever going to be sufficient to balance "100% of your leech rating is instantly returned to you as magic bullshit lifesteal". Instead, make VP do something like "20% of Maximum Life added to Life Leech Cap/100% Faster Life Leech Rate. No Regeneration." Literally double the cap and leech speed of default leech, and we all know from Slayers that such a bonus would indeed be very powerful. it would not, however, be uncontrollably powerful the way VP is right now, and it'd still force VP to respect the same rules as regular leech. because it'd be regular leech, just a lot more of it.

I feel that VP is op regardless of who is able to take it. With enough DPS (which most likely will still occur), the only thing you need is the ability to not be 1 shot. In my limited opinion I feel like they should:

-remove VP from the game completely
-increase life leech cap and rate to increase survivability, but not to the point where it enables facetanking. Players should still have to move.
-give ele casters a bit more access to leech that doesn't pigeon hole them
-increase the effectiveness of armor (maybe have a modifier that increases armor the closer you are to a mob) to account for melee
