So is the ranger just the game's hard mode?
There's also kintsugi which is pretty much only there to prevent eva characters from getting oneshotted.
I make dumb builds, therefore I am.

Well, with life and evasion build, getting one-shot is the natural cause of death. With an ES build you take a lot more hits but you can leech all of that damage back faster than you take it. That's the mechanical core issue.
I think 5k life is a bit ambitious. Even at 92 I could only get there with a Belly of the Beast, which is quite expensive as a 6L. The same goes for other unique chest options (Kintsugi or even Kaoms). 4.5k is possible before amazing endgame gear. After all, you want to kill things, too. |

" Depends how many uniques you're using, if it's mostly rares and you're covering decent ground on tree you can get to 5,5k no problem. Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

" Killing things is not an issue for any decent Ranger build. You basically need to plan your whole tree around life, and pick up what damage you can (and tons of damage elsewhere). 5k life is not ambitious, it's necessary. Have you done something awesome with Sire of Shards? PM me and tell me all about it!

Well, it certainly is possible to get to those life levels. But what's the cost?
Assuming 170% life bonus from tree (I have 166%, Viper's proposed tree has 169%) you still need more than 600 life (including 50% of strength bonuses) on gear to get there. For a new player I still consider that ambitious, sorry. My Raider would need ~140 life on gear to reach 5k. I'll check tonight what happens to my dps when I unequip Rat's Nest and the amulet (which could get replaced by generic +70 life rares). I doubt it's worth it. |

" Are you struggling with dps? If not it's worth it, people often get too hung up on the tooltip, a good bow build can afford losing 10-20%. I don't really play bow much but you can check the char Lynskein I got, that's how much it took to hit 5,5k life, that's a decent number and I don't think it was very costly overall. Pathfinder, pound for pound, is the strongest class in the game.
Not to mention Raider HoWa. |

I am fooling around with a (eventually, lvl 66 Dreamfeather) Spectral Throw Raider build, and I feel your pain. I have little experience in the Ranger portion of the tree, as well as with evasion characters.
I am currently running Blasphemied Warlord's Mark because I seem to be perpetually mana starved, but that Enfeeble suggestion is a good one. I just restructured my tree a little to get the mana/life leech nodes by the Duelist so hopefully I will be able to swap into Enfeeble. Without a doubt, however, this character feels more fragile than any I have built. I am hoping it fleshes out in the 70's with access to better life rolls on armor, as I am struggling to get to 3,000 at level 60 (with a Belly of the Beast). Balancing resists has been a challenge with this character too, moreso than most it seems. |

Nothing is stopping you from building ES with a ranger. Most popular meta pathfinder and raider builds are, in fact, ES-based. There are a few inefficient travel nodes until you reach the ES area, but that's it. It's nothing compared to what you're getting from these ascendancies. You could even say they are custom-made for ES, since with a CI build you aren't using healing flasks and that's what you want with a Pathfinder, and they both provide immunity to status ailments.
Go ahead and have a look at the top pathfinder and raider builds in the ladders, I haven't seen them but I can bet there will be plenty of ES there. More ES than life probably. https://www.poebuilds.io/builds/hc?page=1 It's the deadeye ascendancy which is pretty weak. The Pathfinder and the Raider are more than fine. You have to be realistic about these things.

" What is struggling? Dps is kill speed and it's not like I could shoot an LA into a pack of Shaped Strand mobs and then run through two empty screens. Regarding the item swap that I posted about, replacing my helm and amulet with rares that I used before (with 91 and 26 life plus 23 str) I lose about 33% of my dps while gaining ~350 hp. I may have a glass cannon mentality, but that cannot be worth it. |
