Can you still portal / flee / die in boss fights without penalty?

Amusing thing is too I just watched a video on IGN talking about how amazing the new bosses were... watched the developer die in battle 3 times and just instantly teleport back to the boss to resume the battle... yes; so amazing. It would be nice if this games could stop swinging from Diablo 2's dick in that regard... at least some kind of innovation... I mean even Diablo 2 had this feature for the Ancient's battle where you could not retreat and death reset the battle.

Still feel like you either are looking at the wrong game genre in general, or have some kind of nostalgia goggles on in some form.

I admit, I never played the original Diablos (dial up internet way out in the country for way too much of my childhood). But due to my addiction to these types of games and knowing why they are addicting in general, I come up with a few points:

1) Story is important, but not that important.

No story, or a lame story just shows you didn't really care about the game to begin with. These games are skinner boxes first and foremost. The loot design is what compels us to keep playing over and over hoping for that reward for pressing that lever a variable number of times. Story, art design, etc. are all secondary, no exceptions. These elements have to exist and meet a standard of acceptableness or the general public will toss it away but the skinner box addiction of loot is the foremost thing. So story may be more important for you, but if you weren't inclined to be playing this genre of game, I would keep wondering why you don't just play a first person solo RPG where story comes much further up in priority.

2) GGG takes the "story-mode" as a learning phase, not an epic journey of struggle and defeat (at least for standard and softcore temp leagues).

You want no doovers? Then don't let yourself try again. If you want to play groups but still hold that motto, find like minded people and only play with them. The resounding number of people where portaling in and out during act fights is irrelevant are not going to sympathize with you. Many will suggest you play hardcore and do or die and others will tell you to find another game if it bugs you so much. There is literally nothing to suggest GGG is going to change this game mechanic as it would mean gear checks at the end of every Act that people don't have the patience for versus gear check at map bosses, where your attempts at killing or be killed are much more limited and rewarding. They also clearly designed their gameplay around unlimited portaling in Acts (as it costs currency, a negligible amount, but a cost nonetheless) and a limited number of times in maps. If they were to change this mechanic, prepare for the bosses to become incredibly easier as people would become too frustrated with accidental deaths ruining the run to keep playing.

3) Izaro and the lab is your niche.

No do overs. No portaling out and coming back. Can make a nice profit off of uber lab and there are no requirements that you don't do it outside of reaching end game lab and starting currency/offerings to start your farming.

4) What you think is lack of innovation, may be the only thing keeping the game alive.

Like I brought up in the earlier points, you and a few others may be a fairly limited group that enjoys the no retry as a whole in game. It encourages rampant dps checks as the safest way to progress through the boss battles would be to get as close to 1 shotting them as possible and the proliferation of allowing multiple attempts in games of this genre indicates more people are content with this game mechanic than a 1 do or die method. This is the one point where I will take offence with your recent post as it made it clear that you think of yourself as a better, stronger gamer because of your preference for this type of game mechanic. This is going to be a matter among the genre where you have to pull your head out of your ass and accept that the vast majority of people think a 1 attempt boss fight has a niche place, even if it was present in every game of this genre in some form, but it will never be the boss fight mechanic as a whole. Because again, the loot grind is the #1 aspect of this genre. If 1 attempt fights were the norm, the fights would be a hell of a lot easier to appease those who want to farm and not have wasted minutes/collective hours of time and be forced to back track every single time they mess up or have an internet issue and lag into death.

Seriously - this is not Baldur's Gate, or as you referenced, X-Com.

This is not an RPG, this is an ARPG - with emphasis on Action. And literally antithetical to the careful coordination of TURN-BASED STRATEGY.

By the by, save-scumming in the games you describe is the spiritual comparison to the "portal cheats' you are disdaining in POE.

Why does the action of someone else porting out of a boss fight offend you so - if you do not like it, don't do it - this is, after all, a single-player game in Multi-player/MMO make-up anyway. For that matter, don't put down a portal before the Arena door ro a boss so you have to run through the whole zone/map back to the boss if you fail if that self-flagellation makes you feel more accomplished.

TLDR - Get your chocolate out of my peanut butter, you ain't making a Reese Peanut Butter Cup here.

What OP wants to mix is not chocolate. Chocolate is enjoyable...
