Can you still portal / flee / die in boss fights without penalty?

I couldn't really take the game seriously because of the built in cheat/cheap tactic that allowed you to drop a portal during boss encounters, hop back to down to re-flask, then return and continue the battle from where it left off; the boss didn't heal or reset... same issue dying on softcore, the boss would still be injured from the previous battle... have these at all been addressed? I always hated this feature from the Diablo 2 era "Not even death can save me from you" ...

This feature still exists.

You could simply not use the feature or try hardcore.

Couldn't they just implement a new league to try this out?

Why though?

Also, your highest level character is 25 according to your profile. Have you done any of the endgame content before making statements like this?

Yes, and the game has changed A LOT since then.

mapping imposes a penalty for this -- it eats a portal.

In groups -- impractical to impossible, depending on size.

Solo -- if you're running well-rolled maps and a bit of char-based iir/iiq, you're probably wanting all portals for town runs.

Yes, still totally viable in SC A1-4... but really, who doesn't map or run other endgame content (atziri, shaper, laby, etc)?

(in HC, facing a boss that you can't easily handle is suicidal)

I donno, I want to run through the game story with friends and actually have to be skilled enough to defeat a boss on an even playing field without the availability of a built in cheat... hardcore is too extreme, I need a middle option... apparently this game doesn't offer that... I like having to pre-plan before a boss encounter and losing or retreating is a at least a partial setback. Otherwise is just feels trivial and mundane.

Then I recommend you get through the game to the endgame, where the fights are more challenging and this is much less of an option due to very limited portal allowances in maps/the lab.
Have you done something awesome with Sire of Shards? PM me and tell me all about it!
Labyrinth is a pretty big part of the game now - If you die within it you have to start the whole thing over again, and it's pretty important that you manage to go through all four versions of it to unlock your character's true potential. In fact the endgame labyrinth costs around 4-5 chaos to enter each time so failing repeatedly on that one could be a real problem.

As mentioned above there is an XP penalty in higher difficulties, capping at 10% to next level XP lost on death in maps.

There are 126 different maps, and I managed to hit level 90 after clearing 100 or so maps by dying only a handful of times. If each boss fight ended up killing me once or twice I doubt I would make it past 80 or so.
